Session 1
General Summary
The day began with the party sitting in the Wicker Goat Tavern, located fairly centrally within the Village of Saltmarsh. After finishing their final duties as caravan guards, they have finally decided to set out on their own. When the farmer, Braxton, sotrms into the tavern and loudly explaims to an older seated woman that his daughter has been kidnapped. As a group you decide to wander over to the table to determine what the problem is, and you are quickly informed that Braxton's daughter, Anna, has been kidnapped by a roving band of Hobgoblins. You learn the identity of the woman to which Braxton is speaking to, Eda Oweland, a prominent member of the town council.
Eda turned to the bar to ask for volunteers to help mount a search and the party was only too happy to volunteer, for a fee of course....
The party quickly determin the direction the Hobgoblins were last seen heading, and after a quick trip to some of the local vendors, stock up on some basic equipment and supplies should this turn into a protracted, and somewhat dangerous task (items purchased from Captain Xendros). About an hour so later, the party sets off, hot on the trail of Hobgoblins and their captive, several hours behind, but their trail is easy to follow and they have made no attempt to hide their tracks
Late in the day, the party traces the Hobgoblin party to an area containing several "burial mounds" or "barrows", with tracks leading straight towards a small cliff face and opening of a cave that you cna just make out in the dying light. The psrty carefully approaches the entrance to the cave, and see that the passage continued 50 feet into the arth, sloping gently downwards and seadily widened from 5 feet to 10 feet. Carefully traversing the passage, you see that the passage opens up through a hole in the wall into a room where the stonework looks much more deliberate.
As the party approached the room, you see that it is inhabited by two Hobgoblins guarding the entrance, although they seem tyo be paying little mind to the passage or the opening. You prep for battle and easily dispatch the two "guards" taking very little damage in return. You quickly loot the bodies of their weapons and press on deeper into the dungeon. From the quality of the surroundings, and the careful nature of the stoenwork, you quickly determine that this place must have been built by the dwarves, but was long forgotten
You carefully open the door to the north wall, and see that it opens up into a passage that eventually turns to the east. You slowly make your way, and in doing so, notice that there is a secret door on the west wall. Upon opneing this secret entrance, you notice see that it is a hidden store room, a search of which nets you a fist full of small silver nuggets work 150gp. Not satisfied witht hese gains, you continue to search the room and locate a second secret door in the north wall. You carefully open this door and find another secret room, this one not yet spoiled by the Hobgoblins. Even though you carefully searched the room for traps, you did not notice the pressure plate in the sentre of the room, and steppin on it released a swinging blade from the ceiling, which fortunately missed making contact. A further search of this room locates a pair of fine jade idols worth about 75gp each.
You press on down the corridor, lookng for traps the entire way, but these were crafty dwarves, and their traps are well hidden. You unfortunately set of a small pressure plate resulting in poison darts being shot out from the north wall, which unfortunately strike true, but your healing powers are able to minimise the damage. As the corridor curves to the sourth, you see another closed door, and careful inspection reveals that it is not trapped. You open ther door and move into the large chamber and see another two Hobgoblins, who have already started to charge twoards you. You launch into action, and defeat the foes, although not without taking some damage from the viscious creatures. Due to the stench and state of this chamber, you determine that this room has been turned into a makeshift barracks, a search of which nets you 17gb, 29sp and 84cp amongst the worthless trash.
