Hawthorne Field

(Abandoned)

" Nothing here of value, just an old half-built airfield which was abandoned. Looks like the construction equipment was left here too. Grid coordinates Lima Sixteen, if it matters. Waste of my time-"
— Survey Report, 3022
The planet of White Reach has had a number of failed or unfinished projects across it, usually due to a lack of funding or changing interests. On the continent of Orenn, development was mostly reserved for industrial purposes such as mining and refineries. With the majority of settlements being on Pelea, including the spaceport, an airfield was built as a location to start receiving materials for construction. Situated on the northern portion of the continent, the field had the bare minimum of facilities required. Plans were always made to improve upon the field, only for the Senate to require the funding for other reasons. For a couple generations, there was little done to the field other than maintenance.

In 2965, the Castellan Corporation funded a purchase of the land from the government and began rebuilding the field to serve as a field which could receive smaller aerodyne DropShips. Unforeseen complications caused it to be too expensive, and so the efforts were changed to provide space for larger storage facilities. Refining ores and recycling old metal was proving lucrative, but money needed to go into expanding the coporation's holdings. A split happened where the independent "Holfield Mining Claim" became independent, though they were still selling ore to Castellan. This left the project at the airfield stalled out again.

At the turn of the millenium, Castellan sold the field to another small company called Hawthorne Transit, which specialized in intercontinental transit. The idea was to turn the field into a layover destination, allowing service to destinations on Orenn and Argeith Island. Newly rebranded as "Hawthorne Field", a large terminal was being constructed along with a hotel for overnight guests. Negotiations over running the hotel failed to reach a positive end, however, and the project was left unfinished. Due to missed tax payments ownership of the land defaulted back to the White Reach government, who then classified the field as off-limits to commercial and private aircraft.

As of 3033 there has been no further attempt to develop the airfield and all existing infrastructure has become unreliable at best and hazardous at worst. Numerous petitions have been advanced to start development again, but these have all failed to gather the necessary signatures to proceed. Castellan and other companies on Orenn have since built their own receiving depots near their own facilities, and the spaceport in White Reach has expanded into storage yards which used to be held by Baroness Elizabeth Wallings. Hawthorne Field remains abandoned and unfinished.
