Chilika Lake
Chilika Lake is a large inland lake in Northeast Laivra. Despite the hot climate in that region, the lake is completely frozen. This strange circumstance has given the lake a place of prominence in the stories and myths of all the ancestries who live near it. More modern arcane or mechanical explanations for this have also been put forward.
Grippli Lore
The Grippli community that Zaluoh is part of says that before the spirits of fire and ice became separated into the Rime and the Scathe, the weather on Vrashyn was far more volatile than it is today. Fire spirits and ice spirits often combined explosively, resulting in great storms, floods, and other events. But at this lake, a fire spirit and a water spirits fell in love with each other and resolved to cohabitate. One turned into hot air while the other turned into ice, and the two mingled in the fog that forms over the frozen lake.Changeling Lore
The Chohenj culture to which Pemma Harrody belongs tells a different story. Long before those of Fey Ancestry and other humanoids came to dominate Vrashyn, the plane was inhabited only by Changelings and an unnamed race of beasts who walked on two legs. Though Changelings have the power to alter their form, the beasts were backed by powerful gods and called on them to help drive Changelings to the corners of the world. During this war, a great battle was fought at Chilika Lake. The Changelings avian and aquatic form to reach the great island in its center, but the beast men soon followed in ships. Their leader, a powerful warrior named Veurmikla, met them in the water. Veurmikla knew the spirits were angry with the beast men. They had taken many trees to build their ships without offering anything to the spirits in return. Veurmikla called on the spirits to come to his aid and the spirits obliged, crashing giant waves over the ships freezing the beast men in place. Though his people escaped, Veurmikla was trapped under the ice. It is said that he still swims in the depths, keeping the water frozen lest the beast men return.Arcane Explanation
Many scholars have pointed out the parallels between Chilika Lake and Vruda, a resort town built near an area of unusual warmth off the coast of Parthil. They suggest there must be some magical force that can explain both these anomalies, perhaps one related to the existence of The Rime and The Scathe. One Satyr Wizard known to history as Bythas the Headstrong surmised that these points of unusual temperature meant that there must be places within The Rime and The Scathe that are habitable. He dedicated his life to calculating their likely location, but when he tried to teleport to one, he was never heard from again.Mechanical Explanation
Prominent Artificers have noted the abundance of Pre-Cataclysm settlement and Machinesaround Chilika Lake and suggest that a machine may sit below the lake, freezing its water. Critics of this explanation have pointed out that lakes are common areas of settlement and that freezing the lake would be counterproductive to the survival of any people.
