Dustbowl Desert
A large desert at the edge of the explored world, far to the east. Beyond it lays only treacherous sea, for thousands of miles. The desert has a singular plateau in its center, on that plateau is a citadel that is its own city-nation. The desert spans over a thousand miles at its longest, and 673 miles at its narrowest. During the day temperatures in the Dustbowl area can reach 124o Fahrenheit and at night it can reach the freezing temperature of 17o Fahrenheit. Any travelling on the surface need to travel quickly with lots of water, travelling the most in the morning. Sand storms happen at least twice a month, they usually break against the plateau or the walls of the city, but occasionally they sweep over the city. Even in the winter the temperatures remain about the same as in the summer.
Geography
Red sands form dunes and there are hidden crevices that may catch travelers off guard. The only water nearby is in the underground rivers and lakes that the people from the citadel draw their water from. There is just red-shifting sand as far as the eye can see in most places in the desert. On two sides are an ocean, the other sides are connected to a range of foothills and a small forest.
Ecosystem
There are handfuls of desert ironwood trees and joshua trees and cacti scattered throughout the desert, they have deep roots that can reach the underground rivers. Some creatures such as lizards, hares, and foxes live in the desert. There are also burrowing owls that sleep in dens during the day and come out at night, hunting mice and other small creatures. Other creatures eat the cactus fruit, and then get eaten themselves by predators.
Ecosystem Cycles
Not much changes temperature-wise but animals are more likely to give birth in the spring. No animals in the desert hibernate and they all stay where they live (in the desert).
Climate
During the day temperatures in the Dustbowl area can reach 124o Fahrenheit and at night it can reach the freezing temperature of 17o Fahrenheit. Sandstorms happen bi-monthly (twice a month) if not more.
Fauna & Flora
Desert ironwoods, Joshua trees, various cacti, and small scrub plants live in the desert, most have deep roots to reach the underwater rivers --- particularly the River of Life --- they also use minimal water.
Natural Resources
Under the desert are rich mines of various ores, stones, and a rare material called Cyanosite that is used in a super strong mortar. This mortar is in the walls of the citadel.
