Chahari

The Chahari are a proud people that live on the red plains of Nunne Chaha. They are nomadic by nature, following the migratory patterns of the wild beasts of the plains.   Spirit Guide: You can call upon your animal spirit totem to defend you from harm. This functions as the spell protection from good and evil using your wisdom modifier as its spell casting ability. You can not use this ability again until you finish a long rest.

Family names

Instead of family names the Chahari people identify themselves by the name of their tribe. Chahari tribes are numerous and players are encouraged to create their own tribe for their back story. Bellow are a few examples of tribe names.   Ma'iitsoh, Atsa, Ayani, Nashdoitsoh, Lin, Bjjhka, Jeeshoo

Other names

Once a tribe member reaches adulthood they are sent out into the wilderness to prove themselves a worthy member of the tribe. Once they succeed they are given a new name by the tribe's spirit walker. This name symbolizes the individual's character and is used in conjunction with the name that is given to them at birth or in some cases replaces it all together. The names are broken down into three categories color, nature and animal. below is a list of examples and their meanings. players are encouraged to use any combination of the three or even make up their own.

Red Often seen as the color of embers and blood, someone given red as a name might seem brash, angry, or hot-headed, but alternatively might be given the name to due their warm and inviting personality and the ease with which they make friends or find people drawn to them. Branch In nature branches are recognized as the brittle and replaceable limbs of a tree, though those that recognize their value see them as growers of leaves, providing sustenance to the greater whole they are apart of. In that way people given the name branch are done so because they are of little value to the tribe and replaceable, or because they more than pull their weight in providing for their tribe. In this way the name has become unfavorable, eve for those that recognize that it was given to them in honor. Fox Often seen as intelligent and cunning animals those given the name fox often have to take time to see how they feel about it as cunning for it’s own sake can easily be seen as either a positive or a negative. Regardless of what connotation is implied there is the universal understanding that those with the name Fox are most likely to out think rather than out fight there enemies.
Orange Despite appearing in nature in a number of ways, orange most often finds itself associated with licking flames and the dying autumnal leaves likewise “burning out” as their time ends. In this way the name orange is given to individuals who will burn brightest but also burn out. Those with health issues who hope to do something great before they die, or perhaps those whose manic personalities or obvious blood lust can end up getting them into great danger. River Seen as fast moving and full of life, those given the name river are often done so because they are active, energetic, and have a true love the indulgences of the world around them. However, large enough rivers are often seen as obstacles that need to be crossed or otherwise dealt with in order to move forward and in that way some might find themselves receiving the name could be seen as some form of burden or difficulty they play on the lives of those around them. Turtle Slow and shelled creatures that live simple lives, the name turtle can easily be meant to mean someone who is slow to change or simple minded. Being given the name yellow is due to their bright happy go lucky personality or higher than average levels of intelligence. Conversely some receive the name because of their generally sour demeanor and bad attitudes. Stone Seen as hard, durable, a building block, and something that can be cut and sharpened into a weapon with enough effort, many of those aspects easily transfer into why someone might receive this name. Maybe you are sturdy and reliable, a great member of the team, possessed of the potential to be a warrior or just dull, round in the belly, and stubborn. Lion King of the jungle, huge masters of their pride, and proud defenders of their territory. Lazy day sleepers that lie about while their lionesses do all of the hunting and cub raising. In other words the name of lion can easily be given to very different kinds of individuals and isn’t always a badge of honor. King or Absentee. Defender or delegator. Leader or lazy. It’s up to those receiving this name to decide for themselves and to make the most of it.
Green Even on the red plains the knowledge of green as the color of most vegetation that is widespread is commonplace. Someone given the name green might be because they have an amicable personality and can travel anywhere and still make friends. However they might find themselves named green because they always seem to pop up in places where they aren’t wanted or appreciated, or because others find them difficult to get rid of. Mountain Because of their massive size allowing them to be seen from far in the distance, mountains are among natures most recognizable and imposing aspects. Those given the name are done so because the recipients often have imposing, larger than life personas. Easily given to those with obvious leadership qualities, it however just as easily applies to those prone to being bullies or otherwise domineering people. Elephant Imposing, powerful, intelligent, and armed with a pair of sharp tusks. The elephant is a name often taken with great pride, whether it be a durable and dependable member of the community or known and valued warrior or guard. However it can also be said of those named elephant that they are slow moving or plodding individuals possessed of little urgency during times of need.
Blue Often seen in nature as the endless sky and the placid lakes. The name of blue is often associated with someone who is calm, levelheaded or patient, but could also mean someone who is aloof or empty-headed. Flower Beautiful, eye-catching, appealing, temporary. All things that describe flowers and all reasons why someone might receive the name. Perhaps they are possessed of natural beauty, or are otherwise likable, but just as likely they are known for being flaky or unreliable. Hawk A hunter free to go where they wish and do as they please. Capable of easily downing prey larger than themselves. Those that are given the name hawk are often valuable members of the tribe, skilled hunters and or quick witted combatants. Perhaps though they are given the name because of their air headed personality or known desires to someday truly spread their wings and leave the tribe.
Violet Most easily associated with various blooming flowers and among the vibrant shades seen during sunset, things that are beautiful but only temporary. Those named violet might have been done so because of their vain or narcissistic natures. However they might be given the name in because they are already seen as valuable members of the tribe, an ironic distinction that leads all the truly vain to believe that they are valuable because of their beauty. Tree Trees are tough and durable. Starting out as flexible saplings they eventually become unmovable, hardened, pillars of their environment. While being alive they also often provide life, homes, and shade to the other creatures of the forests and savannas they call home. In this way the name of tree is mostly seen as positive because most people given the name are likewise pillars of their community. Sturdy or reliable tribesmen that others can look to for support as a provider. However those who give the name might do so because they find the receiver unmovable, stubborn and unchangeable, or perhaps very rough of personality on the outside. Wolf Pack hunters, nocturnal assassins, vicious hunters. Someone named wolf at the very least is expected to have great teamwork skills, but often differ is other aspects. Some are expected to be great assassins and warriors, some are angry or aggressive, while others are expected to challenge authority hoping to some day be a “Pack Leader” themselves.
Brown The unfortunate color of both earthly dirt but also fecal matter those given the name brown, even for good reasons, often find it unfavorable. Besides being seen as just a garbage human being, the name brown could also be associated with potential, either to grow into something better or to foster the growth of others. Cave Dark, difficult to navigate, potentially full of danger but also mystery. Someone given the rare name cave might be seen as obtuse, difficult to deal with, annoying, or a hindrance, but often times also in recognition of having potential to become more than they appear to be on first glance. Perhaps in possession of a true treasure of a tribesman when they mature. Rhino Extremely deadly, capable of extreme destruction and are most feared in a charging crash. Rhino is a rarely given name as it most often only applies to those that other tribesman fear as bloodthirsty, aggressive and battle crazed. Easily seen as berserkers and loud destructive people, the rhino however does still have a valuable place in some tribes societies as defenders and destroyers in inter-tribal conflicts.
White the color of clouds, dandelions and snow. In other words ephemeral aspects of the natural world. Someone with the name white might be known for living in the moment rather than planning ahead but could also be given the name for being flighty or unreliable. Grass Capable of growing everywhere and easily, incredibly recognizable despite having a myriad of forms that ultimately seem identical to most. The name grass is given to those possessed of the ability to go anywhere, make friends with anyone, and perhaps find some success in most endeavors they partake in. However they might also be seen as bland or boring people, possessing little of their own personality and instead becoming more like the people around them. They might also be seen as inconvenient or a nuisance that always seems to be around. Dove Beautiful, pristine, calm. The dove is truly a symbol of peace and is a name often given to those who show more interest in medicine, spiritualism, or herbalism. However the name is also given to those know to be possessed of extreme cowardice as perhaps they have only taken to those safer professions out of the fear of leaving the safety of the tribe.
Grey A color associated with stone and age, those identified as grey might be named such because the are dull or have a blunt way of speaking, while others might be identified as “Old Souls” who prefer older ways and traditions of doing things. Either way it’s not commonly considered a favorable name. Breeze Quick moving and brief, flighty and impossible to latch onto. The name breeze isn’t often seen in the best light. Often given to people that seem ready to leave their tribe and strike out on their own, it is also given to those that seem difficult to talk to or who otherwise might find interacting with others difficult for anything but a moment. Sometimes however the name is given to loners who have been known to occasionally pitch in and help those in need, even if it seems out of character. Salmon known mostly for their ability to always find their way home to procreate, the name salmon is thus almost always only given to those who are expected to leave the tribe. Maybe for fame, treasure, wanderlust, or any number of other selfish or selfless reasons. The name salmon implies that they are valuable members of the tribe and the hope that said members will find their way back home someday.
Black Most often recognized through the void between the stars and the dead of night. Being named black might be because you are someone who is very open and honest with people, but also someone who might be seen as bland or boring that might be easily overlooked or ignored. Storm Loud and frightening, dangerous and destructive. Storms are rarely reveled in. However some tribes have been known to use storms as cover to move in on and attack enemy tribes unexpectedly. For these reasons and more those given the name storm are done so because they themselves are loud, boisterous and possessing of larger than life personalities and angers. Storm is also sometimes given to those who are brutish and clumsy and find themselves sometimes trampling the people and things around them. Storm might also be given to someone seen to have much potential to be a great warrior and useful tribesman in inter tribal conflicts. Squirrel Small, flighty, curious individuals with a known penchant for preparing for winter. The name squirrel can easily be given to a member of the tribe that loves to travel and play in the woods. They make great scouts, whether it be to locate enemy forces or valuable resources. The name squirrel usually implies a level of tribal usefulness that is greatly appreciate. However it could also mean someone who is quick to run from danger, or even assumed danger, and stockpiles unused goods and resources from the fear of future bad times.

Major language groups and dialects

The Chahari language is a dialect of common mixed with draconic and orcish.

Shared customary codes and values

Each member of a tribe is treated with respect by their fellow tribes men. However other tribes are viewed with distrust and often hatred as the presence of another tribe means less food and resources for their own. In spite of this tribal feuding there is a place within the Red Plains that is sacred ground to the Chahari people. This place is known as Tsoh Ko, where an eternal bonfire burns at its center for as long as anyone can remember. In this place, no blood is allowed to be spilled. It is meant to be a place were tribes can gather and worship the Great Fire Spirit.

Average technological level

The Chahari have developed a special technique that allows them to harden raw bones making them suitable for crafting armor and weapons. This technique is a closely guarded secret.

Common Etiquette rules

All members are treated equal as long as they pull their own weight, with the exception of tribe elders. all tribe members are treated as one family

Common Dress code

The Chahari have a practical sense of modesty. Most of their clothes are made from animal hide so as not to go to waste. They tend to dress light in order to combat the dry heat of the plains. Beads worn in their hair or sewn onto their clothing act as a symbol of accomplishment, with different colors and shapes having different meanings. for example a red bead would be awarded to someone the first time they learn to light a fire. Feathers often denote ones status within a tribe. elaborate head dresses made of feathers are normally reserved for the tribe's chieftain and spirit walker. anyone else wearing feathers in their hair is probably important to the tribe in some way, perhaps a war hero or the next in line to be a tribal leader. Animal bone is often used to make jewelry such as beads, necklaces, and bracelets. The Chahari have even developed a special technique to treat raw bones making them less brittle so as to be suitable for use as armor and weapons.

Art & Architecture

Being a nomadic people the Chahari do not make much use of permanent structures. Most of the time they choose to sleep under the open sky during the dry season and build tents out of animal hide to protect themselves from the weather during the rainy season. These tents are easy to pack up and move should the tribe need to leave in a hurry. Loom workers often create beautiful tapestries from animal fur and lace them with beads. these works of art are sometimes used to tell a story of particular events using pictographs.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When a child is borne the tribe celebrates the growth of the tribe and the potential that the new tribe member brings.

Coming of Age Rites

When a tribe member reaches the age of adulthood they must prove themselves a worthy member of the tribe. Often times they are given enough food and supplies for a week and then sent out into the wilderness. They must prove they can survive on their own for one week without the aid of their tribe. Upon their successful return the tribe's spirit walker grants them their tribal name.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When a Chahari tribe member passes away they are placed on a funeral pyre with any of their belongings. The Chahari believe that the flames consume the body and let the spirit be free to enter the afterlife.

Common Taboos

The Chahari people believe that life is sacred. They hunt and gather from the land only what they need to survive. To over hunt or to let valuable resources go to waste is unthinkable. Killing a member of your own tribe is considered especially heinous. The tribe is viewed as an extension of ones family. not only that but as tribes often go to war with each other over territory, killing a member of your own tribe is akin siding with the enemy.

Common Myths and Legends

Legend tells that during the age of the Titans, the Chahari people were enslaved by their Titan masters. One day The great spirit of fire came down from the sky and along with the great animal spirits they drove the titans away.
