Mithloriann of the Twilight Trees
Archmage of Clan Fealefel, Seer of Stormbound Threads, Keeper of the Roan Tower

Among the shadowed heights of the Gnarley Forest, few names evoke such reverence, awe, and wary apprehension as Mithloriann. A half-fey wood elf of staggering magical might and erratic temperament, he is a living relic of another age—a spellcaster whose presence bends the air and unsettles even the most seasoned of the Twilight Tree's loremasters. At 816 years of age, Mithloriann is the oldest known elf among the four great clans of the Gnarley Forest, an unmatched master of leyline geomancy, mythal-anchoring, and the faded threads of the world before the Great Silence.

“I see the signs, child. The stars ripple like struck bells, and dreams drift sideways in the stream. The forest remembers, and so must we.”
— Mithloriann, during a rare appearance at the Council of Durvanii

Appearance and Bearing

Mithloriann retains the deceptively youthful appearance common among elvenkind: slim, ethereal, and quietly radiant. His long silver-black hair carries a luster that shimmers faintly in moonlight, a side effect of his fey heritage. Despite his elegant appearance, his eyes often seem lost in reverie or flicker with sudden and unpredictable emotion. Robes of whispering silk and bark-thread shimmer with sigils of warding and illusion, and the faint scent of fresh spring rain follows in his wake.

  • Appears as a regal wood elf with faintly fey features.
  • Clothing constantly shifts hue with the surrounding mood or wind.
  • Wears a circlet of roanwood bark set with kiira-like amber.
  • Voice is lyrical but distant, like a half-forgotten song.

Background and Legacy

Born in the time between calamities, Mithloriann was raised by veterans of the war against the Empire of the Whispered One. These tales, heavy with loss and treachery, formed the foundation of his worldview. His bloodline—a blend of wood elf nobility and faerie ancestry—marked him early as something unusual. He took to magic like a spark to dry tinder, eventually specializing in the delicate fusion of geomantic ley study and mythal architecture.

During the Hateful Wars, Mithloriann earned renown as a battle-mage, but also displayed the volatility of his bloodline. After the war, he withdrew from elven society, building a secluded roanwood tower deep in the heartlands of Clan Fealefel.

He returned from self-imposed exile in 561 CY, sensing the winds of old dangers stirring once more. Discoveries of humans and gnomes seeking lost elven sites and magic, alongside incursions by orcs and bandits along the Wild Road, compelled him to resume his post.

  • Known survivor and hero of the Hateful Wars.
  • Friend and former adventuring companion of Onselven, Royal Mage of Celene.
  • Self-imposed exile ended due to rising threats to Fealefel lands.
  • Respected but feared voice on the Council of Chief Wizards.

Personality and Behavior

Mithloriann is defined as much by his brilliance as his instability. Charismatic and entrancing in speech, he nevertheless has grown increasingly erratic. He adheres to a strict daily regimen of rituals and coded behavior—not for tradition, but to anchor his mind from the chaos of his fey inheritance. Prone to spontaneous bouts of laughter, melancholic wandering, or profound insight, Mithloriann's presence in council is as likely to provoke alarm as admiration.

He views the mortal world through the fractured lens of a prophet—seeing danger where others see chance, and treachery where others see diplomacy.

  • Paranoid concerning human ambitions, especially regarding ancient elven sites.
  • Has moments of profound clarity that often presage major events.
  • Occasionally slips into Reverie mid-conversation or during council.
  • Distrustful of sorcerers; maintains formal control through codified wizardry.

Role in Clan Fealefel

Although Mithloriann rarely attends full gatherings of the Carael Lon'Taari, when he speaks, the entire clan listens. His understanding of magical infrastructure is without peer, and he is often consulted on issues of planar bleed, leyline misalignment, or fading loci. He has taken a conservative stance toward sharing Fealefel knowledge with humans or even fellow elves of Oakvein, believing that their ancient pacts with the Archfey must be honored through secrecy.

  • Resident of the Roan Tower, hidden in the northern heartlands.
  • Specialist in geomancy, leyline cartography, and mythal magic.
  • Vocal proponent of magical isolationism.
  • Contributed heavily to defensive wards in Durvanii and outer tree settlements.

Allies and Enemies

Though solitary by nature, Mithloriann maintains a few important connections. His influence on the Loremasters of Oakvein is significant, and he is whispered to have long-standing pacts with eladrin fey and ancient spirits of the forest. His relationship with other council members is strained but productive, particularly with Sylowyn, whose rise he has not openly contested but clearly regards with suspicion.

  • Ally (possibly estranged) of Onselven of Celene.
  • Wary of Sylowyn; suspected she benefited from Lyadriel's death.
  • Holds complex relationships with Archfey and Eladrin patrons.
  • Sometimes consulted by druids, though mutual distrust remains strong.

Relationships

Elofaen
Once a trusted colleague and friend, Elofaen now serves as both handler and conscience for Mîthlorian, attempting to redirect his mounting paranoia. He respects her insight but resents her quiet oversight, leading to simmering tension beneath a surface of civility.

Sylowyn
Mîthlorian regards Sylowyn with deep suspicion, seeing in her youthful ambition the dangerous curiosity that once led him down uncertain paths. He keeps his distance and seldom engages her directly unless necessary for council matters.

Galaedor
The archmage considers Galaedor frustratingly naïve, though he admires the younger wizard’s courage. Their arguments over human alliances are legendary within the council, but Mîthlorian quietly appreciates Galaedor's loyalty to the clan.

Nylanthir
Mîthlorian respects Nylanthir's martial readiness and often agrees with his dire warnings, though he disapproves of the summoner’s reliance on force over control. Their alliance is one of mutual gloom and pragmatism, rarely warm but often aligned.

The Loremasters of Oakvein
He finds their attention flattering yet intrusive. Mîthlorian rarely responds to their requests for consultation, preferring to hoard his knowledge and regard their overtures with mistrust.

Legacy and Importance to the Campaign

Mithloriann represents the old world of elven magic and its slow decay. His presence offers a direct link to the battles against Vecna's Empire, to ancient mythals and fey covenants, and to the unraveling mystery of the Fading Lands. His erratic nature can be either a source of revelation or catastrophic misjudgment, but his knowledge makes him invaluable in understanding the unfolding planar and cultic dangers.

Suggested Uses in the Campaign:

  • Quest-giver regarding leyline anomalies or Temple activity.
  • Source of rare magical knowledge (with price or risk).
  • Potential mentor or rival to PCs wielding wild or fey-touched magic.
  • Visionary with glimpses of possible futures tied to player actions.
