Aurora Dust
Aurora Dust (also known as just Dust)
is formed in the Aurora Borealis, where it falls from the upper atmosphere onto the land and sea below it. This means that it only falls above the arctic circle, and below the antarctic circle. The dust that falls on the sea sinks to the sea bed, and is spread so thin that there are rarely usable quantities in accessible places. The only land it falls on is in the far north of Venya, above The Trench in the lands known as the Dustlands, named after the Aurora Dust.
When in large concentration the Dust causes weird things to happen around it, and it attracts dangerous and magical creatures, especially dragons. This means that the Dustlands are particularly dangerous, especially during the winter.
Dust is a valuable resource across Venya costing about a platinum per gram of Dust. There is a large trade for gathering parties to go beyond The Trench to collect the Dust. It is also possible to extract it from rocks in a lengthy process. Most dust in northern areas is gathered with the former method, in further south areas the later method is favoured.
The reason that Dust is so valuable is that it magnifies magical effects so that they are actually usable, this means magic users of all varieties need it in large supplies, some, such as druids, can use the dust in the environment. It is also possible to create highly refined dust crystals that can channel a lot of magic without being used up, however these are expensive and often limited to a certain strength of magic that it can handle before breaking.
Without a refined crystal of dust it costs per level of spell:
Refined crystals cost for each level it can cast up to:
