Altonian Empire
Before 8179, the landmass that would become known as Altonia was an unorganized, conflict-filled land. It had many factions that were constantly at war. One of these was the city-state of Solhus. However, in 8178, a man named Alton rallied up the region and started to expand the nation's borders. Its rapid expansion terrified many countries in the territory, which often surrendered as they approached. As it grew, it absorbed the conquered nations' strength, which would be used to fight against others. With this strategy, Altonia was unified as an empire by mid-8179.
Altonia also expanded beyond Southeast Veilinia, extending north to Lua territory, where the settling tribes fiercely resisted colonization. Unable to pass their defenses despite their considerably smaller force, Altonia settled on the border of Lua. Governing two territories split by the sea was arduous, so following emperors and empresses often had their heirs learn by holding the northern position.
In 8319, one such child declared the north Altonian territory independent. This territory became the Visismolian Principality. The two warred for the next thirteen years until the Rising when they were forced to ally to regain their lands.
Culture
Cultures in Altonia vary drastically depending on the region. Although unified under the Altonian Empire, individual cultures were not stomped out as long as they contributed to the war cause. Alton viewed this as a sustainable form of conquest, as unoppressed cultures would not rebel, even under a different name. Most provincial leaders see being part of the empire as more of a very tight alliance. The average citizen rarely sees issues with the brute-force manner Altonia expands with.
Public Agenda
The Empire's goal is to unite all of East Veilinia in its name, believing that peace cannot exist in a divided society. By politically unifying the East through war, Altonia's emperors and empresses believe that conflict will become a thing of the past. However, its origins as a land of incessant warfare mean that diplomacy is not on anyone's mind. Instead, the Altonian cure is military might and annexation. By forcefully uniting East Veilinia, the Empire aspires to create a lasting peace of harmony, strength, and prosperity.
Military
At the age of twenty, all citizens of Altonia must be involved in the war effort for at least one year. This may come in the form of direct combat, production, or medical support. One can be exempted from this if they aren't healthy enough, but the standards apply regardless of wealth. Being a soldier is a highly honorable profession in Altonia, so many choose to stay and become one of Alton's Knights, the highest military order in the Empire.
