Reichtengen

Nestled between mist-shrouded forests and coal-blackened valleys, Reichtengen is a land of contradictions. Its patchwork cities thrum with the clamor of technological progress, magical workshops squat beside smog-belching factories, and ancient villages are left to their traditions without any advancement despite the train tracks that bisect their fields. Faiths collide in its cobbled squares as the devotees of the Hidden Mysteries in the west and the Star Shepherds in the east build their own churches beside the gothic cathedrals of the Clan of Martyrs. The truly faithful in the cities pass out bread to the starving poor, while hinterland druids whisper purifying rites to soil poisoned by chemical plant runoff, and in every public house hushed voices whisper that another Cleansing is coming.

Once ruled by the iron-willed Laskar Dynasty, Reichtengen now fractures under the weight of a brutal succession war. Noble houses, each backed by rival plutocrats and foreign interests, vie for the Crown, while mercenary armies bleed the countryside dry. Peasant factory workers squeezed by punitive rents and worked to death on mechanized lines whisper of revolution in taverns and tenements while farmers left to rot in their fields dream of big city comforts like indoor plumbing and electricity. Desperation and opportunity are every where, from the ritzy shops where alchemists sell shoddy smog-masks, to the roads where artisans smuggle enchanted weapons to rebellious militia, and the back rooms where priests auction indulgences to the guilty rich.
