Pereonopolis

Pereonopolis, founded by its namesake, Pereon the Great of Korris, was used as a staging ground for the empire's campaign on the northern reaches of the continent. When the Empire fell soon afterwards, Pereonopolis, as with many of the other Korrian outpost settlements, broke apart from Korris to form its own govenrnance. Unlike many of the others, however, Pereonopolis thrived in its independance, and quickly grew to become a great city-state. It established strong trade routes by land with Bhaldoral, the River Kingdoms, Bashka, and Raqis, and by sea with Korris and Najka.   Today, Pereonopolis has the distinction of being the largest city in Vandrius, and is known worldwide for its modern and cosmopolitan sensibilities and towering, beautiful buildings. Pereonopolis was notably one of the first major civilization centers to accept Tieflings without prejudice, and many of them have come to the city to escape the hatred of other nations, or from the stifling monasticism of Tel Quessith. It is also home to the most dwarves outside of Bhaldoral. Dwarven architects have developed new techniques to build towers that reach as high into the sky as their ancestors had dug deep into the earth.   Recent imports of Nethecite have lit up the city like never before. It is used to power everything from near-permanent glowing light sources to locomotive tram railcars that bustle throughout the city. A powdered form of the mineral can even be sprinkled in a drink or on food for a surge of magical ability, which is often a euphoric experience.   Music and culture thrives within the city, and opulent parties are held by wealthy nobles or glamorous celebrities nearly every night.   Officially, the city is governed by a council elected by the populace, but in truth the real power lies with various criminal syndicates that vie for power and place whomever they wish on the council.
