Orcs are a resilient and vibrant race, deeply connected to nature and their ancestral traditions. Their unique biology, cultural practices, and adaptability in the face of external pressures distinguish them as one of the most intriguing and diverse races in Valthor.

Sex and Gender

Orc society embraces a dual-gender reproductive system that sets them apart from other natural races. She-orcs, known as maidens, are celebrated for their strength and wisdom, often fulfilling roles as warriors, healers, and leaders. Conversely, he-orcs, referred to as mandens, possess a remarkable biological trait: the ability to bear children. This dual reproductive capacity makes mandens deeply respected as life-bringers, embodying balance and creation within their society.  

Reproductive Anatomy

He-orcs possess both male external genitalia and a fully functional uterus. Fertilisation occurs internally, facilitated by biological or magical processes that ensure compatibility, even with hybrids. Mandens maintain high levels of testosterone alongside pregnancy-supporting hormones, preserving their physical strength and combat readiness while carrying children. Pregnancy in he-orcs is marked by noticeable abdominal growth, as their physiology adapts to support the foetus without compromising agility or endurance. The gestational period is relatively short, lasting 6–8 months, allowing for quicker recovery and continuation of their active roles within the tribe.  

Physical Traits

Orcs are physically imposing, with heights exceeding most humans and elves, and muscular frames that display their innate strength. Their skin comes in vibrant hues of green, blue, red, and purple, symbolising their connection to the magical and natural Essence of Bobocoz. Prominent lower fangs and sharp, slitted eyes contribute to their striking appearance, while their exceptional stamina and sharp senses—particularly sight and hearing—are adapted to the dense jungles of their homeland.

Connection to Nature

Orcs hold a profound reverence for the Essence, the unifying energy that flows through all living and non-living things. This philosophy shapes their rituals, which include symbolic tattoos, dances, and chants performed in harmony with their surroundings. Sustainability is a cornerstone of orc culture. They take only what is necessary from nature and return offerings through conservation efforts and ceremonial practices, ensuring the balance of life and death is maintained.  

Bobocozan Traditions

Tribal leadership in Bobocoz is a balanced system, with councils comprising both maidens and mandens. Leaders are chosen for their wisdom and ability to maintain harmony rather than for physical strength alone. Pregnancy, especially among he-orcs, is a deeply celebrated event. Mandens are adorned with ceremonial tattoos, body paint, and symbolic gifts that honour their role as life-bringers. The entire tribe supports the pregnant manden, providing resources and care to ensure their well-being.   Orc craftsmanship reflects their connection to the natural world, blending artistry with functionality. Weapons and armour are adorned with feathers, bones, and gemstones, while magical plants and rare materials from Bobocoz enhance their tools and garments.  

Interactions with Arailian Society

Orcs who have settled in Arailia face unique challenges. Many experience an identity crisis, torn between their ancestral traditions and the societal norms of Arailia. Some integrate as warriors, scholars, or artisans, while others form underground movements to preserve their cultural roots. Despite the pressures, orcs maintain their resilience, often creating spaces where their traditions can be taught and celebrated in secret.  

Cultural Practices Surrounding He-Orc Pregnancy

Pregnancy is regarded as a sacred act within orc society, embodying the balance of creation and strength. He-orcs carrying children are revered and treated with honour, with ceremonies marking significant milestones in their pregnancy. These rituals include the application of tattoos and body paint that symbolise the manden’s connection to the tribe’s ancestors and the Essence. Parenthood is a communal responsibility, with extended families and tribes rallying to support the manden and their mate.  

Challenges and Strengths

Orcs thrive on their cultural adaptability and physical resilience, excelling as warriors, artisans, and spiritual guides. Their deep-rooted connection to nature and strong communal bonds make them resistant to external exploitation, including Damon’s attempts to weaken their cultural identity. However, orcs raised outside Bobocoz often struggle to reconcile their heritage with the expectations of Arailian society, creating internal tensions and a longing for the traditions of their homeland.   In a world shaped by diverse cultures and conflicts, orcs remain steadfast in their dedication to preserving the balance of nature and honouring their ancestral traditions. Their ability to adapt without losing their identity ensures that they will continue to thrive, even in the face of great adversity.
