History
Around 50 years ago, a group of delusional cultists who worshipped demons moved into town. They attempted to build a portal to the Demonic Realms (they didn't even know what they were going to do afterwards, they hadn't thought that far ahead.). They had a large cache of resources thanks to a wealthy member, using these resources they gathered materials in order to build a really good portal.
The gathering of these resources attracted a group of adventurers (A Bard, A Paladin, A Spearman and A Rogue.) this group persued the cultists through the surrounding area and eventually found out about the portal. They rushed to stop its activation.
The Cultists realising that the adventurers were coming rushed to finnish the portal and they forgot to install a very important part. Just before the adventurers arrived, the cultists activated the portal. Upon activation the portal blasted out a wave of destructive magic, this reduced all the remaining cultists to dust. The adventurer group found the open portal and the ashes of the cultists.
The Adventurer Group attempted to close the portal in various different ways, all of them failing. Eventually several curious Demon Folk from the other side came through and villagers from Overbarrow (Then named Barrow) to ask what was happening. The Adventurers explained what was happening to both parties not realising that several Demonfolk were present. Upon calling the Demon Folk on the other side "Blood thristy Monsters" the Demon Folk who were present spoke up with outrage. This made both The Adventurers and Townsfolk of Barrow realise that the Demon Folk on the otherside of the portal were not "Blood Thirsty Monsters." as they were always told.
The Adventurers attempted several different times to either close or destroy the Portal via many means including explosives, magic, bringing in clerics and more. They were unable to succeed in this task.
While this was happening the People of Barrow realised that the last time anyone had even seen a demon was over 300 years ago, so the people of Barrow decieded to give the demons a chance.
The Adventurers eventually gave up. They realised that the only way they could destroy the portal would also destroy the town above. So, they tricked a court mage into deeming the Portal a Gateway (Although they did not say what God owned the gate and it hasn't been claimed by a God, so its only a Gateway in name.) and therefore make it a Holy Object that cannot be destoryed
