Hollowshade
Hollowshade is a perennial flower found in nearly every Mistkin household, known for its soft white petals tinged with violet or pale blue and a faint rain-triggered luminescence. Though unassuming in appearance, it is one of the most versatile and reliable plants in all of Vailreth, cherished not for spiritual power, but for its practical magic and daily usefulness.
Unlike its rarer counterpart Vailroot, which grows deep within The Hollow Beneath and is tied to grief and transformation, Hollowshade is cultivated openly—in home gardens, on public balconies, and in community greenhouses. Its hardy nature and affinity for rain-soaked climates make it a natural staple of Mistkin living.
Properties and Uses:
- Rain-reactive phosphorescence: When rain touches its petals, Hollowshade glows softly—making it popular as a natural night-light in windows, pathways, and indoor gardens. Some Mistkin dry and press petals into luminous ink or thread.
- Mild calming agent (not emotional/memory-based): Steeped petals produce a light floral tea used to settle nerves or aid sleep, often consumed after heavy meals, before veil travel, or on long rainy nights.
- Bioluminescent dye base: Hollowshade petals, especially after blooming in full rain, can be distilled into a glowing ink used in ritual cloths, veillinen garments, and spell diagrams.
- Edible blossoms: Often candied, added to raincakes, or used to garnish festival foods. They have a cool, lightly sweet flavor and are safe for children and Veiltouched alike.
