Mistkin

"Kin of rain, memory, and the veil."

The Mistkin—sometimes called Rainfolk by outsiders—are a people shaped by grief, memory, and water. Though they appear human to the untrained eye, this is a glamour born of instinct and magic. Beneath it, Mistkin skin is softly blue-tinged, their blood a shimmering silver. Even in silence, they feel too present, too still, like the air before a storm.

They are not fae, though they are remembered like them—vanished into myth after the war known as The Fracturing. It was during that conflict, when humans sought to seize Saelenreach , now known as The Hollow Beneath, and its emotional magic, that the Mistkin bound themselves to the Veil. The Mistkin tore themselves from the world. One city, Pluvia, survived—hidden by the Veil and only accessible in rain. This act was not just protection. It was transformation. From that moment on, they became something...else.

Mistkin age slower than humans. As children, the difference is subtle; in adulthood, it becomes undeniable. Their coming-of-age is marked by a deeply personal ritual known as the Dream Rite, where the veil turns inward and the Mistkin faces ancestral echoes, emotional inheritance, or buried truth. Afterward, time loosens its grip on them. Many live for centuries. Some choose not to count the years at all.

Their connection to rain is biological, magical, and emotional. Rain sharpens their thoughts. Fog eases pain. In dry weather, they may feel distant, even fractured. They do not record their history in ink but in shared rituals, planted symbols, and storm-sung songs.

Most humans cannot distinguish them from their glamour. Fewer still can understand what it means to be Mistkin: to walk as memory made flesh, and to belong to a world that only exists in the rain.

A People Scattered

The Fracturing left the Mistkin fractured in turn. Some were killed, some fled, and others hid in plain sight—their glamour sealed permanently, blending into human cities or vanishing into wild places. These scattered descendants form the Mistkin, living without Veilbinding, Dream Rites, or formal connection to their ancestral culture.

Some diaspora Mistkin pass their nature down quietly through oral stories or rain rituals held in secret. Others don’t even know what they are.

Meanwhile, groups like the Clearborn Accord reject the Veil entirely, choosing to live openly but unbound. Others linger in emotional exile, always half-called by the rain, never fully home.

Mistkin who drink Tears of the Deep undergo the metamorphosis into Veiltouched.
