Varisca

The coins we use

"I see you've gone some coins by now. Have you learnt much about our coin though?" asks Renaxer while moving one of the small coins in between his fingers with a smirk. "The lack of answer is all I needed to hear, my friend."

You stare at him as he sets aside your coins and fishes some coins from his pocket. He set in front of you two coins: one of the circular ones and one of the square ones. He then took out his necklace, usually hidden under his shirt, and from it removed one diamond-shaped coin before putting the necklace back on.

"And finally... I am showing a lot of trust showing you this, don't let anyone else know where I have these coins!" he says, before putting one of his feet on the chair next to you, showing a string around his ankle, with a single hexagonal coin. He took the string with the coin and put it on the table.

"Now, I might not be the most expert on this, but as a trader, I feel I know enough to teach you about our coin system." he smiled.

The coins

So, what's to be learn?

These coins are called Varisca and it's, officially, the only accepted way of obtaining things, though trade of materials or knowledge is common in between particulars.

They are made using an unknown method by the government, out of the gem known as Variscite, which is mined in two government-owned mines in this region.

There's 4 different coins, each with their name, shape, and size, yet the biggest coin is barely seen or used. Their value is represented by their size and shape, which is often checked by its weight as well, but is also seen by it's imperfections: the more imperfections, the less valuable.

UnitValueNameDescription
1c1CersCircular, imperfections cover more than half of it
1s10ShersSquare, imperfections cover about half of it
1r100RersRhomboid (sides of different lengths), imperfections cover less than half of it
1h1000HersHexagon, no imperfections

Storing them

Got any preferences?

Traditionally, the coins are often stored either in small leather bags that one can keep in their pockets or tie to their belt. Sometimes, the bags are changed for a piece of rope holding the coins, as it is less bulky, can hide better in one's clothes, and it's easier to tie it up to the person or a clothing piece of them. Sometimes, with more valuable coins, they are added to simple strings that become necklaces or ankle bracelets, as it's easy to hide them and close to owner.

Noble people and merchants are a bit more extravagant on how they store their coins. Noble people in special. They like to display their riches, showing how much they have, and thus add coins to their jewellery and display it as much as they can. Nobles do mostly to show off, merchants sometimes say they do so other merchants know they can trust them.

"Now, are you happy with that bag? Or would you rather have a necklace for the coin?"

Your version of the currency is really nice. I think I should also have such a currency that isn't looking like modern coins but an older version of it.

Enjoy Worldember 2025!

Thanks! I had fun brainstorming it, did get a bunch of help from friends though, as I don't usually do currencies.

Ok, I chose the bag but somehow you didn't make that choice easy!! Reading about how the nobles store their coins sounded pretentious, but seeing Renaxer had one of his in a necklace made me second guess myself xD Very nice work again! Simple, clean and very interesting!

Worldember is finally here!! Here is my pledge!

Thank you! I'm glad that I managed to make you doubt on your pick! I wanted for both options to have their pros and cons, so I hope I managed to do it with the bag as well; seems that I managed to do it to some degree with the necklace at least :D
