Created by me, with the help of many; inspired by everything.
Welcome to Urbûn!
The Realm of Urbûn is a land full of people, magic, wonders, and strife. It is an ever-evolving world of our own creation, where rich cultures have come to heads, joined, and receded for thousands of years. This vast universe is the one universe in which all of the events of Our campaigns take place.
Urbûn is the name of our D&D setting. Like many D&D settings, it is based on our world with most of the cultures and societies reflecting real world ancient and medieval cultures and societies. And like our world, history does not start when our story begins. Much like the real world, although to a greater exctent, Urbûn is old, very old. And it shows, as this world is full of mysteries and legends waiting to be discovered. It is impacted by the natural processes of geology, hydrology, etc. It is also impacted, quite significantly, by both divine forces and mortal actors.
Concerning Worldbuilding
Urbûn is a world under active construction. I've been building it for several years, with help from friends through the years. Most of the work is available here, but some have still yet to be transferred to this server from their previous homes (old wikis, documents, and collaborative notes). While the world and its lore are primarily my own, our friends have helped inspire us and shape it. In some cases, they've even helped to write the articles.
Urbûn is a high-fantasy world inspired by the many worlds like it. I, the primary author, and my friends set most of our tabletop roleplaying games here, so it is disproportionately inspired by the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons. The Elder Scrolls, The Lord of the Rings, Critical Role, Harry Potter, The Witcher, Game of Thrones (and A Song of Ice & Fire), the Soulsborne series, and countless other works are reflected here in various ways. Any similarities to the work of others that are not specifically noted are unintentional. If you notice something uncredited, please reach out.
When me and my former friend and co-creator first began to create the world of Urbûn, I scoured the internet for art that inspired me and uploaded it here. At the time, Urbûn was a pet project only intended for the use of our friends and us, me and my former friend and co-creator. In many cases, we have failed to credit the original artist. We are actively working to remedy that. They deserve to be seen.
Please take note that the world of Urbûn is nearly ubiquitously based on the real world in terms of geography and the spread of cultures and that any similarities of this nature noticed are entirely intentional as we believe it to be a better way of representing a large variety of cultures and ethnicities rather than either relying entirely on fantasy races and cultures or simply creating another facsimile of medieval western Europe. However, while we are familiar to an extent with Norwegian, English, and German, the vast majority of real-life languages represented in my world are things that are entirely foreign to us and we may have mis-represented in our attempts to form fantasy variants of by simply matching together sounds from those languages. If you are a native or otherwise fluent speaker of any of the languages represented in my map and notice something a bit odd or nonsensical in the names, please don't hesitate to inform me! I greatly appreciate all the help we can get.
The World
This world truly is "a-breathing." It has gone through several different iterations and will likely endure several more. I adapt it each time a new Dungeons & Dragons: 5th Edition/One D&D sourcebook is released (or rather when I can afford to aquire such material)so that Urbûn can continue to serve as a rewarding and complete world to play in. Occasionally I have to edit established lore to fit the introduction of new classes or ancestries.
Many locales in Urbûn are inspired by real-world locations.
Kingdom of Preumsterland is strongly inspired by Germany, where one of my ancestors are from. The lands of
Njorskarmarkr are based on and heavily inspired by early medieval Scandinavia as both me and my former co-creator are from that part of the world.
The Imperial Qyzharate of Duryad is clearly a fictional version of the Ottoman Empire, Persian empires, Al-Andalus, Charthage and other cultures, states and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa, which I have always been facinated and interested in. The history of this world often rhymes with the history of Earth because I (
Valraun) am an avid amature student of it. We did and I do all this in the hope that it makes this world feel more familiar with our players, our audience and formerly ourselves, now me. Please enjoy.
Urbûn was the third planet from the Sun in Realmspace. It was orbited by two moons, named Codore and Múdrim, and by a cluster of asteroids, known as the Tears of Selûne.
Urbûn is the seventh and current version of the world and the seemingly the first that made its creators content, for now...
Urbûn exists in the Material Plane, although it features connections to other planes of existence, such as the portals to the elemental planes scattered across the continents, and many other “gates” to both the Feywild and the Shadowfell.
Many different languages are spoken across Urbûn. Common is the most widely spoken among humanoids, though most sentient races, and nations also has their own languages.
