Orientation to the Shadow Investiations Unit
The orientation process of the Shadow Investigations Unit was developed in direct response to the Failure of Secrecy that accompanied the expansion of Shadow Rifts within the Mundane world. This period marked the collapse of the long-standing belief that ignorance could maintain normalcy. Prior to this shift, knowledge of Shadow, magic, and non-mundane entities was fragmented, safeguarded by occult traditions, disparate agencies, and informal networks that operated independently and often at cross purposes. The breakdown of the Veil as a reliable barrier exposed the dangers of these divisions: Mundane-trained responders relied on rationalist frameworks ill-suited to metaphysical phenomena, while arcane operatives failed to anticipate the legal, social, and political ramifications of actions taken outside emerging systems of authority. This led to a series of significant failures, including the mishandling of Shadowkind whose memories had been erased by the Gift of Lethe, the improper confiscation of artifacts whose magical persistence destabilized their environments, and breaches of new statutes, which precipitated both diplomatic and metaphysical crises. In response, the orientation process was formalized and standardized, transforming from ad hoc briefings into a structured initiation protocol that integrated legal doctrine, metaphysical literacy, and supervised exposure to Shadow phenomena. The process evolved beyond mere instruction, serving as a cognitive realignment to prepare recruits for a reality in which magic, multiple realms, and ontological uncertainty constitute the fundamental conditions of the era.

I’ve seen recruits who think they understand Shadow walk out of orientation still tied to Mundane assumptions. Orientation isn’t optional, it’s what keeps you alive when the laws of reality stop making sense.
