Free isles
While it is considered a sub-culture to Gemlings by most schoolers, they also agree it is a tangential at best. Formed from disillusioned members of other Gemling cultures, either disinherited sons, failed merchants, or outcasts, these people forged their own communities on the fringes of the city states. This also splits the sub culture into island dwellers and ship crew, though many things are the same.

Family names
Due to the focus on found family over blood, many will change their last name to 'da' followed by the ship or port name, though a few do keep their last names.

Shared customary codes and values
Found family is seen as almost sacred, with loyalty to the crew and ship, not necessarily to the captain, for ship crew and the little town for the island dwellers. These makes any person who would harm the whole be turned upon by the rest.
Common Etiquette rules
Etiqute losses most it's meaning, with social interactions being or friendly and customs based on the history of the two involved instead of societal rules.
Common Dress code
Style and fashion are alot less universal with everyone wearing their own style, though showing off arms is common.
Ship crew dress more like the Gemling military, though wealthy members will start to look closer to the noble men.
Island dwellers very much depend on what they can afford.
Art & Architecture
The architecture is more wooden and built for purpose rather then display. while a few buildings may be built stylised this is normally the most important buildings in town.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Rather then buried in graveyards, people are often placed on small boats and sent out to sea.
Common Taboos
Betrayal of the ship is seen as the ultimate taboo, weather this is giving information, killing another member without cause or stealing, this would often result in severe punishment including keelhauling or quartering.

Beauty Ideals
Beauty ideals are more open to personal taste, though many prefer athletic builds.
Gender Ideals
Gender roles were disposed of, as a more shared community of everyone doing any job they were capable of was adopted.
Courtship Ideals
Relationships are done for love, marriage is more seen by island dwellers, rather then ship crews.
