Kovin

Kovins are a breed of cattle animal, often found on well-tempered islands. They have large, bulky bodies, thick skin with short, coarse fur of various colors, and large, innocent-looking heads. Humans and agamians both are known to raise and farm them for meat, leather, and bones. Some kovins are kept as mounts or pack animals, depending on their nature and temperament.   Mounted kovins are a special breed of kovin, as they require very powerful legs and a strong back to support the weight of a human or agamian. They're few and far between, with only 1 out of every 20 kovins (on average, of course) capable of being mounted. You can identify them by their thicker legs.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kovins are four-legged beings, with a large body and a front-facing neck. Their heads are very angular, their snout nigh seamlessly blending into the rest of their face as it gradually shrinks to a point at the nose. Males have grand horns that point out in opposite directions, while females have much less pronounced horns. Their ears are large and round to a point, very much like that of a seng. Behind their large bodies swings a thick, but short, tail. Much like an agamian's tail, but without the length of such.

Ecology and Habitats

Kovins are usually found in the same reasonable temperature that humans and agamians are found in, and their thick hide makes them uncomfortable in erg-like heat. As such,, wild kovins can only really be found in central regions of an island. Farms placed near an island's Hemitt Line tend to produce stringy, dry beef, thanks in part to the high stress levels of the animal and the heat of the area drying out the body's moisture.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kovins are strictly herbivorous, and eat anything green and smooth. Farmers have concocted a basic feed from shredded moss and cactus bark, which seems to agree wtih the majority of kovins that enjoy the stuff.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Kovins are the primary source of meat, leather, and bonework on Unos. This makes the species highly sought-after as a commodity and a resource. As a major source of exported goods, the [United Trade Office] ensures that farmers and ranchers are keeping a strong population of kovins in their farms, as well as making sure their wild numbers aren't dwindling.

Average Intelligence

While it's believe that kovins are stupid, they're much more intelligent than many people think. They are capable of analyzing a poor situation, and doing what it deems is best to survive. The common accusation of stupidity comes from their fast thinking and slow reaction time, as a kovin is often incapable of fixing a mistake they made once they've made it. This makes them fairly easy to deceive, and explains what makes people think they're dumb.
