Sengs
Sengs are medium-sized canines that can be found on temperate islands across Unos. You can identify a seng by its large, semi-pointed ears. They're very easy to domesticate, and are the go-to choice for a pet. While there are dozens of varieties, very few are noticably different from one another, so many people assume they're all the same.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sengs have sausage-like bodies, kept up by four strong legs. A head, on a forward-facing neck, is accompanied by a short, thin muzzle and a pair of large, flat ears.
Genetics and Reproduction
Sengs reproduce heterosexually, and mate for life. A male and female will meet, spend time to understand eachother, and mate after about a week. This "dating" behaviour can be a problem for seng breeders, since many sengs refuse to mate if they lack a perfect partner.
A seng can give birth to up to half a dozen pups at a time. A litter takes about four to five months to fully gestate, and delivery can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.
Growth Rate & Stages
Baby - At this stage, a seng's ears are limp and already fairly large (though they will grow larger). The ears cover their eyes, though, and they can't see for about three to five days. They also can't walk, relying on the mother or father as a transportation method.
Adolescent - The seng is now walking around by itself, but is still relying on its mother for food and comfort.
Adult - It's been a year. Now able to find its own food, the seng strikes out on its own, often to be the companion of a human or agamian.
Elder - After about 18 years, the seng stops being able to walk on its own, as its bones are starting to break down. They have at most another two years before they pass on, although there are reported cases of sengs living to be as old as 27.
Dietary Needs and Habits
What a seng eats depends on their subspecies. A hunter seng will eat derets and other small critters, while a gatherer seng will eat cactal fruit and certain types of grass.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Sengs often find themselves on islands with a warmer climate, but with strong floral life. Since islands like these exist the erg over, so do sengs.
Average Intelligence
While incapable of using tools or manipulating their environment in any way other than what basic instinct allows, sengs have proven themselves to be very intelligent creatures. They know and remember their master, and can remember up to 50 individuals. They do as their master requests, unless it directly conflicts with their own survival. Intensely loyal, outside of self-preservation. Even then, sengs have also been known to risk their lives for their masters, some losing their lives in the process.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The eyes of a seng are fairly poor. They have very low vision range, and what they can see has little detail. Their auditory capabilities, however, more than make up for it. It's said that a seng hears you before you hear yourself. It almost seems as though they can "see" with their ears, based on how quickly they react to danger. This makes sneaking up on a seng impossible, unless of course, you're able to cover their ears beforehand.
