Gaf Themar
Gaf Themar is well known for its size. With 183 million citizens Gaf Themar is considered to be the largest city in all of Umbrana. Gaf Themar is located next to The Lucerian ocean, and the city is surrounded by a 6-meter wide, 20-meter high wall with at every 100 meters a watchtower. Almost an entire mountain has been removed to build this wall alone.
Gaf Themar has been the capital of many kingdoms and empires. The latest is The Kingdom of Themar, sparked by Gaf Themar itself after the fall of the Intellyan empire. With over a hundred million people living in this city, it also is the most diverse, with people coming from all over Elphroc people from all races and ethnicities, from Elphs to Tarkash and from EIviras to Kratons. Every race you could think of lives within the walls surrounding Gaf Themar.
Within the walls surrounding Gaf Themar, you'd first notice the size of most buildings. Large cathedral-like buildings with gothic architecture litter the city, and religion has nothing to do with it. These are the buildings where people live with up to 50 households. These houses are all owned by the King, Tiberius IV Shugor, and those living there pay taxes to get acces to their appartment. The architecture of these buildings makes even the slums look rich. The further east you get, the richer the people become because you live closer to the king. The king lives in the city's far east in a giant castle. Only the rich can afford to live in this district; even a toll must be paid to get in.
Lighting up the sky are large towers called beacons, sometimes reaching hundreds of meters high, with large pieces of Lucerian Stone at their top. Most notable is the beacon called the Holy Grail, reaching over 1000 meters high, looking like a thin needle with a glowing white sphere on top, almost lighting up the entire city. It's believed that this beacon is much older than the city itself and built in an era long past.
Because it is such a great city, guides help people get from one point to another for payment; some do this on foot, while others have horses and wagons. Some ask for payment upon delivery others ask for payment upfront and steal all you have. Trustworthy city guides wear a sigil of a boot pinned on their chest and some paperwork to prove they are certified city guides. They're most likely more expansive, but you know they are trustworthy, and they know where they are going.
With over a hundred million citizens, criminality is almost impossible to control; therefore, anyone caught in any illegal activity is marked with a tattoo on their face, no matter how small. Covering your face is therefore considered rude but not illegal. It is also not allowed to ask someone to remove their face cover because privacy is essential; only guards may ask this.
