Bhook

Cover Art by Eugene Kibkalo everything else by Zone55X.
Printed long ago in an arcane place of swirling ink and raging waters, Bhooks are sentient tomes able to leap from their very pages in the form of another being.

Outside of drinking ink and feasting on the pages of other tomes, Bhooks eat the memories, emotions and eventually even the bodies of their prey. With the more powerful of their kind able to take victims into their pages to be slowly unravelled and archived into their growing collection.

Faction Interaction

Kessomae

Bhooks that join of their own volition tend to find themselves in fairly secure positions within the ranks of the Kessomae. While those who resist are generally used as storage.

Ullthross

The Ullthross see Bhooks as Aberrations. And as such will likely seek to destroy and they become aware of.

Ayeliads

As with most things unnatural, it is highly speculated that the Ayeliads are responsible for the Bhooks creation. Whether or not this is true, they have a great fondness for them. Though their actual view of them is probably somewhere between pet and cherished possession. Most Bhooks find it hard to resist having their every hunger catered to, and the safety of the dark halls of their benefactors.

Uses

Bhooks as Prisons

Due to the ability of powerful Bhooks to store beings inside of them, they are sometimes used as places to hold such creatures. This almost always requires some sort of control or persuasion, as it is not an ideal thing for a Bhook to hold anything living inside without draining it for sustenance.   In ideal cases for the Bhook, they could be paid or even work in a sort of freelance capacity of their own accord. But sadly for them this is most often not the case.

Bhooks as Transport

Instead of holding beings inside of them for perpetuity, they may be used to greatly reduce the space needed to transport creatures.

Bhooks as Memorials

Sometimes a Bhook may be used to store those who have recently passed or are on the brink of death. In this way, they will last forever marked in their pages. As Bhooks are generally unable to modify what is inside of them, it is suggested that whomever is stored within them is attended to first if they are to be viewed in any detail.   Take caution that Bhooks still gain far more sustenance from something with a spark of life left inside it that one that has already passed.

Bhooks as Therapy

While it may be tempting to give all of your negative thoughts to a Bhook to consume, beware as this will leave a magical absence. Such an absence will gradually fill itself from your environment if something else does not make its way in first.

Limitations

Beings inside a Bhook do not find themselves within a whole new world or the pages of a fantasy land. They are instead held in a limited state of consciousness with little sense of time. Only when the page they are held in is opened may they see the outside world and move animated in whatever way they are illustrated.   Bhooks cannot restore anything without at least a spark of life or something that mimics it to the real world. As such, they make a poor choice for inanimate storage. They also generally have no taste for anything non-living unless it is on brand from the type of Bhook they are.

Outside of a few exceptions, Bhooks are unable to change what is written inside them, only add to it.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Bhooks can often be found hiding in Arcane libraries, where unusual books are not an uncommon find. But they can really be found anywhere. They could be posing as a wizard's spellbook, sitting proudly on a plinth in a lecture hall, or even being read out to worshipers during sermons.   However many more Bhooks may be out and about, posing as humanoids in everyday life. A thief keeping to the shadows to hide their uncanny form. Or those more able to form more convincing avatars may simply be found in a place as unassuming as a tavern, reading a well-cared-for tome.   Older Information

Dietary Needs and Habits

Depending on their age and power Bhooks feed in a number of different ways.   Young Bhooks, known as Booklings or "Bups" will likely gain all the nutrients they need simply from being written in. But to supplement this, and help decide what sort of tome they are going to be, they can still eat the pages of other manuscripts.   Juvenile Bhooks become strong enough to take the memorise directly from those who read them. As times goes on they may even start to take more abstract parts of their readers' psyche such as their fears or other emotions.   Adult Bhooks are able to fully consume somebody who attempts to read them. From which point they will slowly reduce everything that once made them a living creature into words and illustrations. This is the way they gain the most from what they eat.   Older Information
Bhooks feast upon the memories of others, their thoughts, feelings, triumphs and failures. And those whom they devour completely become trapped in their pages as just another entry in the growing lexicon of victims.   Bhooks are also required to eat items that represent their book type. A history Bhook would want to eat accounts of wars, whereas a cookbook would want to eat new ingredients with each thing eaten becoming a new recipe.
