Description
Suijiang is the capital of Paknyin — a vast city of canals, temples, and timbered towers. It stands at the edge of the Drann River where old stone meets wild growth. The city is a place of trade, tradition, and quiet power. Nearly one hundred thousand people live within its walls. Many more inhabit the rice terraces, orchards, and stilted villages scattered across the surrounding hills and wetlands.
The city rests on the southern edge of Pandaros. Here, civilization bows to nature rather than conquering it. The Drann River cuts the city in two. Locals call the districts North Shore and South Shore.
General Features
Streets
Five main roads flow into the city like rivers:
- Monarch’s Way
- Shrine Road
- Farmer’s Path
- Warrior’s Walk
- Scholar’s Lane
Each route enters through a correspondly named gate and joins at the central plaza. These streets are wide and well kept, lined with stone paths and trees. Away from the center, the roads narrow to alleys and steps. The outer wards have dirt or gravel tracks, often hemmed in by mossy fences or paper lanterns.
Buildings
Suijiang’s buildings mix wood, stone, and tile. In the Inner City, pagoda roofs rise over narrow streets.
Each district has its own shrine or spirit hall. Some honor animal totems. Others venerate
Valhir or
Jan'ahrem. The outer city has humbler homes, but along the main roads, the style remains elegant and clean.
Drann River
The Drann River is wide, slow, and dark. It flows southwest through the heart of the city. Though once clean, its waters now shimmer with strange light and whisper to those who linger near.
Four wooden bridges cross the river. The piers are carved with guardian beasts — turtles, lions, cranes, and oxen. In the Inner City, the riverfront holds boat docks, fish markets, and small garden shrines.
Corrupted Water. The Drann River is Corrupted with purple Isana. Characters who end their turn in corrupted water must succeed on a DC 10 Charisma saving throw or gain one level of purple Isana corruption.
Inner city
Black Ivory Inn
The ruins of the Black Ivory Inn lie just beyond the north gate, scorched and silent. Fire gutted the place in moments — a blast tore through the ground floor, and flames brought the upper floors down. Mages tried to stop the blaze, but the damage was done. By dawn, the inn was ash and stone. Now, only a blackened frame and some melted roof tiles remain.
Market Square Plaza
Suijiang’s central market square is a twin plaza wrapped in tea shops, pawn stalls, silk sellers, and fishmongers. Between the squares stands a ring of guild halls and banks — modest but refined, with painted screens out front.
Merchants call out in many tongues. Chimes ring from the pavilions. Paper charms flutter. Children chase colored kites. A tall bronze bell in the plaza’s center tolls the hours.
Muremia ambassy
The Muremia Embassy is a vast stone building raised by the Loxodon — elephant-like folk — over the bones of old crypts and gardens. A forbiddance spell seals the site from teleportation.
The building looms above its plaza, its carved columns and golden doors marked with Loxodon faces. Inside, marble halls and wide stairs lead to the ambassador’s chambers. Sunlight filters through a domed roof into polished courtyards below.
Ambassy basement
Beneath the embassy lies a repurposed crypt. Cells have been built into the old stone vaults, used to detain threats to Muremia.
Society
Law
The city boasts a military forces. Use the Guard Arrival Times table to determine how long it takes for guards to arrive at a location after a crime or similar incident is reported.
History
