Nytheriel

Nytheriel was a grandiose capital city famous for its many architectural wonders. The rule of the Windrunner Queens fostered a vibrant spirit that welcomed folk throughout the realm and beyond, and the city was an international hub for trade and culture. Nearly a hundred thousand people called Nytheriel home, and thousands more lived in small villages and hamlets a few days travel from the city.   After the Great Extinction and the Draco-Giant War, the city is now a ruin, anbandonned and forgotten for safer regions.   Except for the Elves of the summer court, who may still hold records of the kingdom of Lorien, the centuries of history of Nytheriel are forgotten.

Geography

Nytheriel lies hidden in the Wasted cliff. An underground spring, recently awakened by a dragon’s magic, now sends clear water flowing through the city's ruins.

Description

Nytheriel is a grave of stone. Once the capital of the elven kingdom of Lorien, it now lies in ruin. Its towers have fallen. Its walls are broken. Streets end in pits or heaps of rubble. Mosaics lie faded. Trees are long dead. Only crumbled stairways and shattered archways remain to tell of its past grace.   A massive brass dragon makes his lair here. To keep intruders away, he cloaks the ruins in illusion. From outside, the city looks buried underground. Only those who walk through the kobolds’ tunnels in Darkearth Mine can find it.   The dragon’s presence awakened a spring beneath the city. Water flows through broken streets and hollow halls. It brings green moss and clear pools—but also threatens to drown the ruins.   Large sections of the ruins appear to be made of grass as they are covered by the brass dragon's wings.

History

Nytheriel was founded as the capital of Lorien, a shining elven kingdom.   In 1574 BD, during the Lich War, undead forces led by Vecna laid siege to the city. A massive undead construct rose from a nearby lake and breached the walls. The elves reclaimed the city a generation later, but over time, they fled to the Feywild, leaving Nytheriel to decay.   Later, a magical disaster scorched the land. Dragons and giants fought across the plains, wrecking what remained. The city stood silent for centuries—until a brass dragon made it his home. He cloaked the ruins in illusion and awakened a spring beneath the city.
