Portals and Doorways
Shadow Roads, sometimes called Fey Roads, are passages through the Shadowrealm, that parallel leylines in the material world. Portals, that is entrances, or onramps, to the shadow roads naturally occur where leylines cross.
Once manifest a portal can be locked by a someone who has the knowledge and power to do so. Typically the portal is either sealed permanently or can be configured to require a key, a magical object or phrase or both, to allow entrance to the road.
But there are other kinds of portals common in Toresta, and other modern arcane cities on Pasaulis. These portals are based on a variation of the Gate spell powered by a lay energy shard to make it permanent. There portals are often used in locations like the Toresta Polyarcana Academy, where there are high level spellcasters present to set them up and a plentiful supply of ley energy crystals to power them.
Just like Shadow Road portals these doorways can be locked, requiring a key or password , or both to access their use. It is also possible to imprint the doorway with arcane signature of a n individual allowing only certain creatures to pass through.
Manifestation
A portal or doorway appears as a door frame, typically of metal, within which is seen the destination of the portal. Most portals are embedded in wall and give the effect of a mundane passage to another room or area, but that is not necessary and a portal constructed outdoors, for example might seem to be a free standing door or archway. From the front the destination is visible. From the back the portal will seem to just be a freestanding frame and if someone were to step through it they would simply appear in front of the doorway.
A locked doorway will give no indication it is locked. When someone attempts to step through it they will simply be stopped at the interface.
Mechanics
Someone who is authorized may simply step through the doorway. If the portal requires a key or password the key must be presented or the password given before the interface can be crossed.
If someone who is not authorized to enter a protected portal they will be stopped at the interface, even if they are in physical contact with someone authorized to enter.
Portals are generally immune to the knock spell.
