The Coil
A fringe group, mostly harmless. The Coil follow a single leader in each of the Great Cities and claim to have adherents everywhere. They worship the Godhunter, if you’d believe it. Burn themselves in circles around their wrists and give praise to the unbroken cycle of destruction. They seem to think the Godhunter is a herald of the true end, a world without suffering. They say the Ascended she kills don’t release their Ascendancy. Maybe it’s true, shit, that’s above my pay grade.
In Ars Silica, it’s Benjin Arasmi who rules the Coil. You can find him if you ask in the human compound, but, well, don’t.
Structure
The Coil has no central authority. Each sect is self governed and self run, and maybe even come into conflict with each other over differences of belief.
Public Agenda
The Coil seeks to prepare its members for the coming end, heralded by the avatar of destruction they believe the Godhunter to be.
History
In the years between the atrocities of the Ascendancy War and the Rebuilding, the Coil grew from nothing to dominate much of the surviving human population. Weak and scattered, their faith in the gods shattered and faith in their heroes crushed beneath the iron heel of the Ascended, they sought anything to believe in. When the Godhunter began to slay the Seven and One, it was seen as a sign. The first members of the Coil erected the statues of a serpent being devoured by itself, using it as their religious icon. As the Seven and One had killed the gods, they now became as gods and killed one another. Then rose the Godhunter, who killed them. As the cycle of destruction continued, they believed, the world would come to an end.
The cult was greatly diminished when no end game, and the Godhunter faded into obscurity. They remain in pockets, erecting idols and awaiting the true destruction of Ascended that will herald the end of all things.
Mythology & Lore
The Coil believe that the Godhunter is not a person, but a force of nature. Like a storm, she sweeps through the world, dealing death to all who have earned it, purging their souls from their very bodies. They say that one killed by the Godhunter can never return, and this makes it so that each swing of her blade diminishes the world. When the last soul is taken, all shall know the peace of the true end.
Tenets of Faith
- Pacifism: There is no need for violence. None can escape the end.
- Generosity: Share what you have, for when the Godhunter comes, no material wealth will save you.
- Compassion: The end is coming, but there is no need for suffering in the meanwhile. Reach out a caring hand to aid those who need it. We are all brothers before the Godhunter.
