Totani
Qualifications
Before the Totani takes office, they must first demonstrate their strength in three consecutive trials. The Trial of Body, the Trial of Spirit, and the Trial of Leadership. Should they fail, they must not only try again, but succeed at a trial with thrice the difficulty as the one failed previously.
Requirements
Before undergoing the trials of qualification, the Totani must be approved by the previous Totani or a council of lesser nobility. In most cases, the approved canidates are direct descendants of the approvers.
Duties
The Totani is the last word on the rulership of their domain. More specifically, however, they appoint and manage the advisors to their position, such as the Xat'la and act as the commander of their armed forces.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Forceful removal of the Totani is only performed in one manner- ritual combat, with death on the line. Sometimes this takes place after the opposition fights their way through the Totani's armies, other times the council of lesser nobles forces the fight. However, this is considered a just and fair way of taking control of an area, demonstrating the Totani's unfitness for their position.

In other lands, this would be the equivalent of a lordship, up to a king if his territory is of sufficient size and independence.
Source of Authority
The Totani holds power by right of their bloodline and it's history of protecting it's citizens. Should they prove to have grown weak or ineffective, this authority evaporates.
