The Underdark

Geography

The Underdark is a humongous cave system that spans continents and might even make it possible to travel from continent from continent. However, such travel is far from safe. Besides the monster wandering around, pools of acid, ravines, lava flows and other natural features block the traveller's way. Still, exploring the Underdark can prove worth the risks. Veins of precious metals cross the rocks and ancient ruins of long forgotten civilizations can be found in .   A phenomenom unique to the Underdark is faezress. This magical radiation has been used by the peoples of the Underdark to power sorcery. Especially Drow seek out areas rich in the radiation to build their cities. Despite its uses, faezress is not all fun and games. The radiation blocks teleportation and divination magic and examples are known of local fauna being warped by the radiation.

Fauna & Flora

The Underdark is home to the cities of Drow, Beholders, Illithids, Duergar and other, darker creatures alike. Its tunnnels are filled with a plethora of monsters, the existence of some of which is unknown to even the most learned of sages. It is speculated that some of figment of the original forces of creation can be found in the depths. Yet, despite all the dangers, there are also more peaceful creatures. Herds of Rothé, an ox-like mammal, wander the system and settlements of Myconids, the mushroom people, can be found throughout. The Svirfnebli (or deep gnomes) have built mighty strongholds in order to protect themselves from the dangers of the depths. Flora, as is logical, is sparse in the Underdark. If any is present, it is usually one form of moss or another, some harmless, some less so. Grasslike plants are also known to exist.

Natural Resources

The Underdark is rich in valuable minerals: gold, silver, platinum but also rarer stuff like adamantine, mithri and cold iron. It is also possible to find other valuables in the ruins of longlost civilizations.
