Blood Magic Users
For most of history they were not a distinct group, while this form of magic is only hereditary (passed from mother to child) they were not viewed as anything different from other Magic Users. The inheriting of this magic has made them always unusual as the power is matriarchal while society in most places has been patriarchal for many centuries, however they were largely accepted.
In the last two centuries, public opinion has changed. With the growing belief in purity of magic and its academic value many hereditary magics were vilified. This led to the development of Blood magic users as a separate group as they started to pull away from a society which did not accept them.
In the last hundred years, they have been gradually legislated against until eventually the entire practise of this magic was banned over fifty years ago. Users of this magic retreated so far underground that they were not affected by the Marking when that was brought about as it was believed that these bloodlines had died out.
Culture
Birth & Baptismal Rites
Due to the nature of the magic, birth is considered sacred as it is the shedding of blood to create life. When a child is born, one soul becomes two and great power and connection is shared through that.
Children are welcomed into the community by their mothers who will introduce them by their name for the first time. If the child's mother is unable to do this a maternal relative will do this instead.
Funerary and Memorial customs
At death, they are buried so that the blood and the flesh can return to the earth from which it was born. Family graves are common because of the powerful family links that this magic creates.
Ideals
Gender Ideals
They are a matriarchal society so they expect women to play a more prominent role in life than is typical of other groups.
