High King of Jardersfell
The High King of Jardersfell is the overall ruler of Jardersfell. But, while the holder of this title rules the realm, he doesn’t exert complete authority on all the Jarls that serve under him. In the event of war, the High King may call on the Jarls to provide soldiers and they are honor bound to accept.
The title of High King is not hereditary. Instead the heir to the title is chosen by an election where any of the Jarls are eligible and each Jarl gets a vote, as well as the dwarven Thane of the Vakanir and the elven Warden of the Valanthir.
Appointment
Tradition dictates that the election for High King occurs on the island of Ylvdris in the shrine of Eikistrun. After the High King dies, all the electors are notified of his death and make their way to Ylvdris for the election. Meanwhile, the High Kings body is preserved and sent to Ylvdris, so the funeral ceremony for the High King can be performed once all the electors arrive.
After the funeral ceremony for the recently deceased High King, the priests and druids of the Eikistrun shrine hold a feast for the funeral attendees. This is a time to celebrate the life of the deceased High King and for candidates for the title to make their case to the electors, particular the dwarven and elven electors (as they cannot be candidates for the position). After the feast, the election for the title is held. Each of the electors get one vote. If there is no clear winner, the head priest of the Eikistrun shrine breaks the tie.
