Goodbrew Hall

The City of Brewing

Goodbrew Hall is a large dwarven city in the Richlands and is the mountainhome of Clan Goodbrew and is housed in Goodbrew Mountain.

Demographics

Dwarves make up the vast majority of the population of Goodbrew Hall. Halflings make up the largest minority in the city as it is located in the Richlands. There are also a small number of gnomes and humans that live in the city. There are very few elves in the city.   Most of the permanent residents of Goodbrew Hall work in the production of alcohol or in agriculture. Many of the halflings that live in Goodbrew Hall work the farms and orchards outside the mountain. The rest work in the other industries that are needed to make a city run.

Government

The leader of Goodbrew Hall is the Brewmaster of Clan Goodbrew. The Brewmaster makes decisions about which alcohol should be made and which crops should be grown. The Brewmaster also sets tax rates with the advice of their Council. The Council is made up of people selected by the Brewmaster to help run the city. Each council member is chosen to help the Brewmaster run a particular area of the city. The Council consists of the Lawmaster, the Sheriff, the Steward, the Chancellor, and the Seneschal.

Defences

There are very few defenses for the areas outside the mountains. There are a couple of watchtowers which are constantly manned, but there are no large walls to protect the area outside the mountain. The reason for this is that the city wants to have room to expand its agricultural and milling operations should the need arise.   The mountain itself is very well defended. The Hall itself has set of large and thick doors as well as a drawbridge that covers a moat which can be flooded. The walls of the Hall have angled murder-holes which allow the defenders to shot crossbow bolts at the attackers.

Industry & Trade

Goodbrew Hall sells and trades its beers, wines, ciders, and spirits to buyers all over Kadrun. Because Goodbrew alcohol is highly sought after by dwarves and non-dwarves alike, the city makes a lot of money which is used to pay the people who create the products and buy the things that the city cannot produce on its own, particularly cloth and other textiles.

Infrastructure

Outside the mountain, the farms and orchards are set up efficiently. These farms and orchards are irrigated by water that is pumped up from underground rivers and springs inside the mountain and pumped to the outside via canals. There are several windmills that are used to mill the grain that is used to make both alcohol and flour for bread.   Inside the mountain, each kind of alcohol production is assigned to a different area and moved to storerooms near those areas appropriate for the type of alcohol created. These storerooms are locked and only authorized personnel have the keys. On a different area inside the mountain are the forges and smithing sections. While Goodbrew Hall does not have as extensive a forging operation as other dwarven cities have, they still make the things they need and of very high quality at that. There are also agricultural operations inside the mountain as well in the form of mushroom farms. These mushrooms are not only for food but to create some of the most sought after and powerful alcoholic beverages that come out of Goodbrew Hall.

History

Goodbrew Hall was founded after the dwarves of Clan Goodbrew made and completed a deal with the halflings of Cliffacre to clean out the mountain to the northwest of the orcs and goblins that were infesting it.   After orcs and goblins were cleared out, the dwarves of Clan Goodbrew got to work on making themselves a home. This work took several years to get to a point where it was livable and work is still going on to expand the hall.

Architecture

Many of the buildings on the outside of the mountain are of halfling design and architecture because they are typically the ones that live outside the mountain. These buildings are typically either small buildings made above the ground or ones that are built into the side of a hill. The halflings prefer the latter to the former, but the available terrain doesn't always agree with them.   The architecture of the city inside the mountain is of typical dwarven fair. The dwarves did their best to work with the stone of the mountain rather than against it while still making the Hall look impressive.
