Mobile Shield Dome
A large shield projector used by the Hyperion Federation military.
The Mobile Dome Shield is designed to project a large shield around a ground force, protecting them against incoming fire from all directions. It is also mobile, and moves via several large tracks that are powered by antimatter annihilation. Although it can also make use of a ZPE backup power source, it is not powerful enough to power most of the shield.
The shield itself works by projecting a large field of Hardlight. Hardlight is a strong material and can block most attacks including antimatter strikes. For the latter, however, the antimatter strike will annihilate with the nearby atmosphere instead, which creates an extremely powerful blast which will destroy the shield.
Furthermore, it can be disabled under intense fire, which typically happens when hit by artillery or starship weapons.
As it is so large, cumbersome and slow, a mobile shield projector can be a very vulnerable target when not escorted. They are compeltely unarmed and have little armour and as such serve a purely support role. Infantry can cripple them if they hit a weak point with a standard rifle, and anti tank warheads are almost guaranteed to penetrate. It can also take a long time for the shield to regenerate after falling, so the HF miltary usually makes them retreat after the shield collapses. They sometimes have multiple in reserve, allowing them to replace drained shield projectors and allow them to recharge in parallel. These reserve forces are well protected with infantry, anti air and cloak inhibitors to prevent them from being ambushed.
All shields, including those created by the HF and these massive shield projectors, still obey the laws of conservation of momentum. After being hit with a significantly large amount of momentum, the shield does not destroy the momentum but it is all transferred to the shield generators themselves. This usually is not a problem for mobile shield domes due to their sheer mass, but weapons such as the Newton might knock them over. Some factions sometimes develop very powerful impact shells that, when fired at a target, can induce a massive force in the target over a huge surface area, sometimes these are powerful enough to flip shield projectors like these.
