Blightspire

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Blightspire is a strategic fortress that serves as one of two seats of power of the Amerosi province of Kaelvorran. A prime example of the genius craftsmanship of Fire Giants, it is widely considered to be an architectural and mechanical marvel. Contrary to popular belief, it is completely unrelated to the adjacent Brugstad, and was built several centuries prior.

Architecture

Blightspire seems to be tangled inside a network of elevators and ropeways that link its many perches with the land below and each other, enabling the efficient movement of goods, personnel, and materials; its southern lift, the largest, is capable of hoisting entire caravans, up to a total weight of 24 tons. Comprised of 35 synchronized yet independent machines, it is the most extensive mechanical transport system on Theras, and includes 2 out of the 10 largest machines on Rakion.   The machinery has an advanced control system whose analysis took a long time, but vastly increased knowledge of engineering in The Bafigron Empire, and enabled the development of the Sunwheel Chariot. The design and development of the machines were both made by Duergar from the kingdom of Tormazim, but were built and embedded with the structure by fire giants; the control mechanism, however, was designed, developed, and also built by the duergar. For this reason, full reverse engineering was unsucessful.   Vantage points jut from the spire, providing sentinels with vision of the surrounding wilderness and commanders with strategic oversight. Some of these balconies extend as tunnels into the spire, directly connecting to either of its two aviaries, which house a large garrison of the Amerosian aerial forces.

History

Under King Ouldr
As the Menedynn Empire began losing its power and influence, its furthermost provinces were the most vulnerable to acts of aggression by outside forces; the province of Kaelvorran, then known as Mikhrevar, was no different. A clan of fire giants subjugated the locals, and their king, Ouldr, constructed Blightspire to serve as his palace - from which he could govern, rule, handle trade, and wage war. This castle was built on the backs of thousands of slaves from all around the continent, many of whom died of exhaustion or mistreatment.
Under Bafigron
The land was claimed by the Unquestionable Superiority of the Imperator in the name of Sovereign Imperator Flavius the Inventor, who wanted, more than controlling the provinces natural resources and fertile land, to study the structure's machinery in order to build a military force that can complement the empire's cavalry.   During the 1st Gontalian Crusade, the province declared independence, but was reclaimed by the Bafigron empire, who then retreated to Ouldr’s hall. Over time, the locals began refering to it as Castrum Malus, as all taxes and fees were gathered in the hall.
Under Ameros
The local inhabitants were, and largely speaking still are, staunch loyalists to the Bafigron empire; when the empire split into Ameros and Bafigron, the province of Kaelvorran was a high priority province for immediate subjugation. After ensuring the Praefectex was willing to turncoat, the heptarchy sent three infiltrator squads into the castle, whose missions were to eliminate and replace the commanders not loyal to the Praefectex; take control of the southern lift and allow a larger force inside; and executing the Pontifex. A couple of days after the split, the now renamed Blightspire was completely under Amerosi control.
