5th Cavalry Company
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
The Fifth Cavalry Company is an honorary guard and personal retinue unit of the Aderian Royal Army, most noteworthy for its history and cultural legacy.
History
Since its establishment as part of the Second Empire of Ader's army in 405 AB, the 5th cavalry company has taken on many roles, adapting to the geopolitical changes around Lake Kadia.
Exercitus Externus
To reciprocate the construction of the Basilica of Saint Agustin, several distinguished units of the imperial army were deployed to the Kingdom of Agy as deterrent against possible invasion from Tu-Han, which was for all intents and purposes a part of the Yokun Empire by this time. These forces, titled exercitus externus, or external army in Old Aderic, included the 5th cavalry company and were stationed throughout the kingdom. The company was stationed in the heartlands and dealt with domestic issues, primarily with the Hobgoblin hegamony of Maknan and their constant slaver raids.Death of Gareth Verhill
Despite being stationed in Kingdom of Agy and uninvolved in his family's conflict with Kairoz the Andorian at the time, the company's commander, Captain Gareth Verhill was assassinated on the 24th of Last Judgment 730, prior to the eradication of House Verhill that followed the Battle of Navara. The task was carried out by former members of The Lexitar Order working with the Dislerf family, and inspired the later utilization of The Inequitars. Gareth was considered a fair and honest man and was well loved by the people of the Aurum Hills. His death, officially ruled as an attack by a slaver gang, was mourned by nearly the entire province. Two Taldirian soldiers claimed to be survivors of the same attack, and that the attackers were not hobgoblins, but Aderian humans. This claim was dismissed as propaganda, in attempt to further tarnish the Emperor of Ader. With Gareth's death and escalation of The Great Kadian Split the company was disbanded; however, in 732 AB, veterans of the company pledged themselves to the Queen of Ader, and she assigned them to serve as the retinue of Champion Cavalier Percival Half-Elven.Honorary Guard
Over time, the company gradually shifted from a retinue unit for generals and Champion Cavaliers to a honorary guard unit. The driving factor behind this shift was the company's deployment position; in order to be closer to high-ranking members of Kadian society, equites of noble status strived to be assigned to the company; over time, the high nobility preferred assigning their progeny to the company, as it carried less risk than other units. Currently, equites are assigned to the company due to their noble status rather than due to their merit.
