Necromantic Box

What is a Necromantic Box?

Necromantic Boxes are an essential tool for magic item dealers who deal in magic items. They block Fate effects from the objects that they contain from affecting the owner of and/or vicinity of the magic item(s) in question. They also stop the local land god from looking in on the magic items in question, which prevents items from spontaneously disenchanting when crossing theome boundaries. For this reason they are also infamously smuggler kit. As the land gods dislike having magic items brought through them in secret, Necromantic Boxes are often opened only in Missing theomes, for fear that the contents will spontaneously disenchant as soon as the Box is opened.

Merchants who swear their faith to the land gods sometimes create very elaborately decorated Necromantic Boxes to contain only specific kinds of goods, and they pray effusively before every time they open the Box. This is for instance how Tekagoli Luck charms can be transported between theomes where they are worthless to theomes where they have a market. It is also how Skill Circlets are typically transported between theomes, as to prevent them from disenchanting into mundane circlets while crossing theome boundaries. Praying to the land god before opening a necromantic box that contains only magic not offensive to that land god is usually enough to prevent the items from spontaneously disenchanting when the box is opened.

Who can Create Necromantic Boxes?

Almost any necromancer who can enchant items can enchant a necromantic box. They are not complicated to make, though they inflict entropy on the necromancer as all necromantic spells do. They are most renowned as a Gnarlen Good, since gnarlen can perform easy necromantic spells without being decayed by them.

Are these Boxes Valuable in Trade?

As necromantic items, Necromantic Boxes are often offensive to the land gods, which reduces their value in trade. As key items for trading other items which endanger their carrier, they are essential. The result of this tension is that the price is good, but finding a buyer can be challenging. Many merchants who cannot create a necromantic box themselves buy them on commission instead of just hoping to find it, and the result of such special commissioning is that necromantic boxes are among the most beautiful of treasure chests.
