Joral
“Hard hands work hard lands.” –Joral proverb
The Joral Kingdom
Structure
The High King is elected by a moot of the land’s Jarls to serve a life term upon the death of the previous High King. While the High King’s power is absolute, the Jarls have tremendous influence both locally and nationally.
Culture
The Joral are a tough, warlike people, having spent countless generations hunting and working hard lands in a cold climate. They value strength and integrity, and hold the virtue of honesty in high regard. Both men and women in Joral have the same duties when it comes to working the land, in case the men must leave to fight.
Military
In the Joral Kingdom, young men are trained by their fathers to fight from a young age. With the Gromish on their borders, their militarism has only increased, as after many conflicts they have come to view Grom as a worthy adversary on the battlefield. When Joral goes to war, the High King personally commands the army as general. The Jarls are expected to individually levy and mobilize troops from their local population centers, and function as officers. For this reason, Joral has no standing army, as all men who are ready able to fight are expected to do so if need the need arises.
Religion
The Joral people primarily worship the Old Gods and forest spirits.
Foreign Relations
Joral tends to be aggressive with its neighbors both out of necessity and tradition. Because the land is hard and does not yield favorable results in regards to farming, Joral pressures its war-weary and unstable neighbors for tribute by remaining a constant military threat.
