Starfall

This is the myth behind one of the two largest holidays in The World Behind, and while there are variations between regions, the core of the story stays the same. A thousand years ago a star fell, bright and blazing in greens and yellows, and impacted the middle of the single continent that consisted of all of saurian kind. The impact reverberated across the world, shattering landscapes and separating the continent into three. The ocean rushed between them, creating the inland seas and waters now relied upon for so much of life. The impact site, meanwhile, remains above water on a small volcanic island between the main continents, the immense crater grown over but still easily identifiable. It is said that in the weeks after the fall, when most were still recovering from the sudden devastation, those who were brave enough to venture to witness the star came away with brilliant new powers, blessed by the star itself. This started an age of heroes in The World Behind, and while that time is long gone, many young Saurians still make the trip to walk the island, deep into the crater, and hope the star has a fate in mind for them.

The holiday associated with Starfall is held at the beginning of summer on the first truly hot days, and goes for four days and four nights (said to be the length of time it took for the land to change after the impact). Stories from the age of heroes are told through a variety of mediums, and all businesses not directly related to the festival are closed. On the final day and night costumes are encouraged, a representation that telling the stories has worked and summoned the people and powers from the past to shine again. The preferred storytelling art differs between cities/towns, and there is some regional competitiveness as to who throws the best celebration.

This tale is the origin for Saurians' reverence of stars and starlight. That light is what introduced magic into their world, and hastened the development of the theory that their world lies in the shadow of another, which all light and celestial material passes through before arriving. It is also, they theorize, why the passages between worlds are a one way trip (light only goes in one direction, it doesn't reflect from The World Behind back to where the other-worlders came from).
