Week 4 Prompt: Tomorrow

Assignment 1: Think about current events that will impact the future. Who is working to create a specific kind of future?

Currently, our group of survivors has just fled the arena and more bombs being dropped on the city. They're in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, regrouping before beginning their slow march north. As far as current events impacting the future, there are many to choose from!

  1. The act of leaving the arena. The scramble as more bombs fell, the incredible loss of life. It's revealed that of 4500 people, only about 2000 made it out alive.
  2. The cost of leaving the arena. Apart from the souls lost, there's also the price of safety and shelter. Will they be spotted crossing the plains now that the smoky fog is finally clearing up after four long months? At least it's spring, but how will they fare in five months?
  3. Who is working to create a specific kind of future? In the arena, the leadership council had one vision, the advisory council had another vision, and Bones had a secret third vision. Now that Bones is out of power, the leadership council has dissolved, its members integrating into the advisory council. It soon becomes apparent that the couple dozen members of this council are not seeing the same future.

There are so many thoughts about this that I could fill several pages! I'll surely expand on my list later; I'm writing during the livestream writing sprint and want to tackle the other assignments! ^___^

Assignment 2: Make sure everything's ready - from your writing space to your writing schedule - before Summer Camp begins!

The nature of my job affords me two primary worldbuilding spaces: my desk at work and my desk at home. I have both pretty well set up, but I'll brainstorm ways to make them better...

Again, the nature of my job affords me opportunities to write around my work. I can't count on that, though, so I schedule time in the evenings to make sure I get some writing in every day - or at least most days!

Assignment 3: Who or what will help you achieve your goal? What will your sharing strategy be during Summer Camp?

This is the one that's hardest for this impossibly shy writer. >_> Joining this livestream is a good start, at least!

  • 6.28 | Even though Homework Prep was closed when I joined Strixxline's stream via World Anvil's raid at the end of the prompt reveal stream, I'm sneaking it in (with that honest caveat!) because I actually participated in chat during brainstorming, so I am immensely proud! ^^;;;

Week 3 Prompt: Metamorphosis

Assignment 1: What transformations and adaptations have the people in your world gone through? What changes are going on right now… and who is trying to stop them?

What transformations and adaptations haven't the people of my world gone through? Would be the better question. ^_^ They're living in an arena with backup generators because the whole city was bombed to destruction. In fact, I'm currently editing the part of the story where it becomes clear they must leave the arena as well because it's no longer a safe place. They're already learning to live with less (less food, less privacy, less bathing), and now they're going to have to adapt that lifestyle to one in a caravan on the road.

Assignment 2: Choose a new genre, style, or author, and take a look at their art! What did you learn and what inspired you?

I am just no good at spending time on properties I have no interest in. >_< For starters, I listened to rockabilly today...I can't say it inspired me (except in a character's development), but at least I stepped outside my own box.

Assignment 3: Read a couple of articles from the community, give them a like, and write about what inspired you.

Week 2 Prompt: Roots

Assignment 1: Look at the cultures and areas you'll focus on for Summer Camp, and think about how their past shaped them.

My areas of focus here are going to be Adam and Ria since they're the main characters who take us through the series. What I'd like to do is go back through the prequel oneshot I wrote to get a sense of how they navigated That Night, and I'd like to write out the pressure points from that experience and how they impact the two of them in this story. I can visualize in my head each moment that turns them into the people they become, but it would be good to write them all down to reference as I'm writing. I also need to write down short summaries of who all my other characters were in the Before Times!

Assignment 2: Go to your world's homepage. What should you change to make the experience more engaging for a first-time viewer?

What shouldn't I change? ^-^;; It's a bit bare right now. I'm going to give this some more thought!

Assignment 3: Think back on your first worldbuilding project. What mistakes do you want to avoid? What good ideas can you integrate into your current project? Be proud of how far you've come!

The Chronicles of Orbis! I have my notes somewhere, though I haven't tracked them down yet. I was a teenager when I built the world of Orbis, and I don't know if more of my inspiration was drawn from LOTR (popular at the time due to the movies) or from RPG video games. I think I'm going to have to find these notes before I can complete this third assignment! ^_^

Week 1 Prompt: Nourishment

Assignment 1: Think about the ways nourishment affects your world. Do people generally have what they need? What happens when they don't?

I've already built this into the plot in a few places by virtue of my main characters being fresh into an apocalyptic situation where food is difficult to find. Sometimes, they must take lengthy expeditions away from their safe space to find food to feed the community. When food runs short, portions are lessened, which causes tempers to run short and children to act out. If they were put in an even more dire situation, things could go downhill alarmingly fast...

Assignment 2: Fill out the pledge document with your goal for Summer Camp!

Should be at the bottom of this page. ^-^ This is only my second year participating and I'm going for Silver.

Assignment 3: If you found any outdated articles in your world, update the most important ones now! Do the same with your worldbuilding meta.

Since the last time I visited the Willowmoor stories I was trying to tell a tale set into the future, all of my articles are outdated for my current purpose of editing the original trilogy. I did start on updating my world meta, though I didn't get far. Since I'm currently working on the edit, I fluctuate between writing moods and worldbuilding moods, and I've been in bigger writing moods!

  • 6.10 | I'm going to start with my meta, and then work on my characters. After that, Willowmoor itself gets my attention!
