When blood and ice collide in the Abyss
dreams shatter
dreams shatter
High in the mountains of Rakan lies Hekara's Abyss, the lair of Lajaka, Ice Dragon of Lassa.
Protected by two stately mountains called the Guardians and the treacherous landscape, the entrances into the lair remained concealed for generations and fell from common knowledge. The trials to become a dragon companion were the purview of scholars, not adventurers.
Until now.
Sikode has dreamed of dragons, from the time of his first conscious thought to the present. He studied both the Flame martial art and the shadowarts with one thing in mind: becoming an attractive potential companion for Lajaka.
Now a respected wielder and advisor to King Shiel of Illena, he returns to his hometown in the shadow of the Abyss, seeking to realize that dream.
Despite the dangers, he and climber Ceten explore the steep slopes and crags, searching for an entrance to his destiny.
Shiobe's excitement in visiting the country of Rakan clashes with her wariness of dragon trials. Traversing a dilapidated dragon lair to reach the Ice Stone, the artifact that will begin Sikode's historic bid to become Lajaka's companion, is a treacherous undertaking that may end both her and the fighter.
Despite her doubts, she plans to use the information she gleaned from dragonpriest and scholarly writings to help them find and beat their rivals to the location.
Kitta dreamed of vindication for her wielding power and abilities, but her enchantment with the Solin court and its queen has waned, as has her fondness for Rien. Sent to master Lajaka at the behest of the monarch, she does not see a triumphant return to Soline in her future, but a fool's errand and failure.
She hates that Rien and Queen Tinera have once again pitted her against false enemies when they ignore the true terror lurking below Iova's darkest streets.
Obsessed with Shiobe and revenge, Rien travels to Hekara's Abyss in search of the Ice Dragon.
His plan? To master the beast, then command Lajaka to destroy his rivals. He will then take control of Kykini Cede and return to Soline to present both to Queen Tinera. He, Captain of the Palace Guard, would receive the hero accolades he craves.
A fanciful dream, but one he will do anything to achieve.
Dragons, however, have minds of their own, despite tales from the distant past painting them as subservient to human masters.
Lajaka, Ice Dragon of Lassa, has not found an adventurer worthy of becoming a companion for over a thousand years. Now that humans congregate near the Abyss, intent on finding the Ice Stone and starting the trials to become his companion, his interest is piqued--but darker forces look to interfere.
Likeda rests in the shadow of the Abyss. As the largest village in the vicinity, travelers, pilgrims, and locals congregate there to shop and hire guides for the trek into Hekara's Abyss.
But all is not well. A deep darkness runs beneath, fueled by hate and jealousy--and none have fallen as far into it as the local Flame martial arts kido. Descended from the art created by Kykini Cede, Flame Dragon of Kassak, and his ancient companion, Ivore, they claim pride in their heritage to cover deadly deeds.
Likeda is not the only place that has fallen to darkness. Kathar di'omo, the largest city in the Ovade region of Rakan, was once known as the City of Light. Not only did its wielders glow bright, but the city leaders illuminated the path for the aki n'di ori so they could shed the yoke of the Jonna Empire.
Now, greed and ambition corrupt the city leaders, a foundation that bloodmages noticed and took advantage of. Lured by the promise of unattainable gifts, they sold their city and its people to darkness.
Shiobe and Sikode believed the bloodmage menace had remained centered in the Midem countries, its adherents occupied with evading the Illenan and Merren soldiers rather than expanding their reach to distant peoples.
Realizing how wrong they were, they must discover why the bloodmages have infiltrated Kathar di'omo, for not only does Sikode's dream depend on it, so does the lives of everyone residing in the shadow of the Abyss.
