Dzthn mznk: An Imp Celebration

Imps, for all their enjoyment of bright, metallic clothing and sparking jewelry, have black fur and darker-feeling magicks. They normally think nothing of these, but on Dzthn mznk, held on the shortest winter day of the year, they celebrate the darkness, of the Twilight realm as well as that found within themselves.   Dzthn mznk begins just after the dim rays of the sun have hidden behind the horizon, but before the deep shadows of night lengthen. A single, dark, deep bell sounds, rung by the followers of the Great Sylfaone, Ceaque. Those that wish to participate in the celebration then remove their bright clothing and their jewelry, don a short tunic as dark as their fur, and race into the twilight.

"Dzthn mznk is who we are, the unseen foundation, and far more necessary than the shell of light we carry."

Staging

The Imps run to a cave, either natural or Imp-built, one cared for by the followers of Ceaque. There are several different caves meant for different adherents, whether adult or child. Family caves are designed for parents and their young children, and do not contain the rigorous physical activity or the frightening aspects others demand. They are dimly lit rather than dark, and the celebration of darkness consists of singing, dancing, and joyous laughter.   For the rest of the Imps, upon reaching a non-family cave, traverse a long tunnel before they enter a huge cavern. Within is darkness; no light, no reflections but for the natural glow of white claws and white teeth. Sound echoes off the rock, at times so loud celebrators must cover their ears. Imps continue to arrive until true night descends, when the faint circle of a moon and even fainter sprinkles of stars glow without the sun's lingering touch.

Ceaque is the sylfaone associated with darkness. He created Twilgiht, and the Imps favor him above other sylfaodolon.

The Ceremony

THE FIRST CAVE
The zrtthn rknt, the leader of the Ceaque cult, rings the bell again. Total silence descends as the sound fades away. Those who arrived first are tapped on the shoulder by near-invisible cult members. Those touched race to a rock face at the back of the cavern. The cult members move through the crowd until everyone has been touched.   The rock face has tiny handholds, invisible even to an Imp's specialized eyes. The celebrators must grope for these handholds, and make their way to the top of the rock face. Some impatient ones use their claws to grip the surface and race upwards; it is not traditional, and is frowned upon by those who insist on following the prescribed ceremony. To traverse the wall is to traverse the difficulties the Originators had in creating the first sphere; it is not supposed to be simply an annoyance. Squabbles can break out on the rock, causing both parties to fall; they, as those who are unable to reach the top, are cushioned by a magick created by Ceaque. These unlucky Imps are kick-portaled to the cave entrance, where they are cared for by cult members. After a healing check, they are told to return the next year.

The Second Cave
Upon reaching the top of the rock face, Imps run through another sloping tunnel and into the next chamber. The soft, sandy sound of water fills the air,. Celebrators cannot tell exactly where the water laps until they rush into it. They wade until they believe they are near the center of the shallow lake, then sit.   The lake signifies the darkness held within the shattered sphere of Velvynis. Imps are urged to meditate in silence, take in the sounds and smells of the water, and think about the beings lost in the destruction of the Earth Mother's first attempt at creating a world. During this time, a soft but heavy magick is released into the cavern. Imps experience the magick differently, but the most common reaction is to feel as if one cannot breathe. To overcome it, Imps must relax and accept that which they cannot control. In doing so, they are able to rise and walk through the waters, to yet another cave. Any who cannot are kick-portaled to the entrance, and after a healign check, are told by cult members to return the next year.

The Third Cave
The third cave is freezing. Wet tunics soak up the cold and despite their fur, Imps shiver. It is the cold before the creation of the second sphere. The more Imps who overcome the water and enter this cave, the warmer it gets as they cluster together. Combined, the Imps overcome that which they cannot singly, as the Originators overcame the destruction of Velvynis to create a new and vibrant world, Elthessera. Twilight, which was created from the remains of the first sphere, is dark and misty as death, but also the solid foundation, the base of the new sphere. Darkness is strong and defiant, continuing despite the attempts to rend it assunder.   When all who are able are present, a cult member rings the deep, dark bell. Silence reigns. The cult reminds those gathered that Twilight is the realm of Ceaque. He is a sylfaone of darkness, but that darkness cradles life and does not extinguish it. He is the foundation, not the destructive force that rips all assunder. Imps, too, are the foundation, the beings who live in Twilight, who care for the remains of the old, but provide the backbone for the new. It is why, Imps eyes are hidden behind the skin, it is why their skin is hidden behind fur, it is why their wieldings are hid behind darker magick; they are the embodiment of the hidden darkness that carries the weight of the sunlit realm. A wielding drifts about them that the cult claims is Ceaque's power, and the Imps are blessed to continue in strength and darkness for another year.
The Return
Then they have to find their way out. Eventually, all navigate to to the long tunnel, where Imps who have discovered the entrance call to others. If all goes well, the group leaves just before night's shadows gives way to the dim rays of first light. They return to their homes, don their bright metallic clothing and their sparkling jewelry and continue as they have, being the foundation for the light.
