Church of the Primordial Dragons

The Order of the Primordial Dragons is a prestigious and revered holy order dedicated to the worship and veneration of the ancient immortal dragons who once ruled the Veiled Realms. These dragons, known as Greatwyrms, were seen as the Guardians of the Veiled Realms and its first elders, wielding immense power and wisdom.   The Order traces its roots back to the earliest days of the world, when Aurelion Sol created the Greatwyrms to be the protectors and rulers of the fledgling planet of Aurora. These Greatwyrms were unparalleled in their might and majesty, embodying the pinnacle of dragonkind.

Structure

High Dragonseer

Role:
Supreme Leader and Embodiment of Draconic Aspiration
Responsibilities:
The High Dragonseer stands at the pinnacle of the Order, viewed as the closest mortal to achieving draconic ascension. They guide the spiritual and mystical direction of the Order, interpreting the will of the dragons and leading its rituals. They are seen as the living example of what members can achieve through devotion. The High Dragonseer also oversees the most sacred rituals, presides over important decisions, and serves as the spiritual heart of the cult. They are believed to have a direct connection to the Greatwyrms through their deep communion with draconic magic.

Wyrm Priests/Priestesses

Role:
Religious Leaders and Educators
Responsibilities:
Wyrm Priests and Priestesses are responsible for teaching the doctrine of the Greatwyrms to the general followers. They lead regular sermons, oversee local temples, and perform rites of devotion. They also educate the faithful on the philosophy and history of the Greatwyrms, ensuring the next generation of followers understands the depth of the Order’s teachings. They also mentor acolytes and guide them through early transformations and spiritual growth. These priests help prepare followers for the trials and paths toward deeper connection with draconic magic.

Scaled Guardians

Role:
Protectors of the Faith and Sacred Sites
Responsibilities:
The Scaled Guardians serve as the martial arm of the Order, devoted to protecting its followers, sacred places, and the High Dragonseer. These warriors train extensively in both combat and magic, specializing in forms of magic that emulate the power of dragon. They often take on physical characteristics of dragons, such as scales, claws and slited eyes, displaying the might of dragons to all who would threaten the order. They defend against external threats, particularly those who seek to harm the Order or desecrate draconic sanctuaries. Guardians are often stationed at important shrines, holy sites, and temples, where they act as the first line of defense and are also trained to lead smaller military forces when needed.

Claws of the Wyrm

Role:
Inquisitors and Enforcers of Doctrine
Responsibilities:
The Claws of the Wyrm are tasked with enforcing the doctrines of the Order and rooting out heresy or infiltration by those who align with the corrupted Chromatic Dragons. Their role is secretive, and they operate both within the cult and outside of it, ensuring that any deviance from the teachings of the Greatwyrms is swiftly dealt with. They are responsible for rooting out corruption, quelling dissent, and protecting the spiritual purity of the Order. They often conduct investigations, passing judgment on those found guilty of betraying the Order’s principles.

Dragon Acolytes

Role:
Novices and Initiates
Responsibilities:
Acolytes are the entry-level members of the Order, undergoing training to deepen their connection to draconic magic. They study under the Wyrm Priests and Priestesses, learning the history and philosophy of the Greatwyrms, while performing basic tasks in service of the Order, such as maintaining temples and assisting in rituals. They also begin their spiritual path toward ascension, taking part in smaller rites and practices aimed at attuning them to draconic magic. Acolytes may eventually choose specific paths within the Order, aspiring to become Guardians, or Priests.

Faithful of the Wing

Role:
Devoted Lay Worshippers
Responsibilities:
The Faithful of the Wing are the general worshippers who make up the majority of the Order. They are not formally part of the cult’s hierarchy but remain dedicated followers. These individuals seek the blessings of the dragons in their daily lives, coming to temples for worship, guidance, and smaller-scale rituals. Many of the Faithful aspire to become Dragon Acolytes, but some simply support the Order through donations, services, and spreading the reverence of dragons throughout the wider world.

Culture

The culture of the Order of the Primordial Dragons is deeply rooted in reverence for the Greatwyrms and an overarching belief in the potential for spiritual ascension. Members of the Order view dragons not merely as powerful beings but as divine embodiments of wisdom, strength, and longevity. This belief shapes their worldview, fostering a sense of humility and devotion. The followers understand that their lives are part of a larger cosmic tapestry woven by Aurelion Sol, the creator, and the Greatwyrms, which encourages them to live with purpose and intention.   Rituals play a central role in the cult’s culture, serving as vital expressions of their faith. Ceremonies are imbued with symbolism and meaning, often involving offerings, meditative practices, and communal gatherings. The Rite of Echoing, for instance, is a powerful ritual that allows followers to connect with the draconic spirits, drawing strength and wisdom from their ancient presence. These practices not only reinforce the members' spiritual ties to the dragons but also foster a strong sense of community and belonging among the followers.   The culture of the Order also emphasizes education and personal growth. A strong belief in the potential for transformation drives members to pursue knowledge and mastery of draconic magic. Acolytes are encouraged to study the teachings of the Greatwyrms and to seek mentorship from more experienced members. This dedication to learning and self-improvement reflects the cult's core belief that every follower has the potential to ascend closer to dragonhood through discipline and devotion.   However, the Order is not without its tensions. The schism between those who revere the Greatwyrms and the followers of the Chromatic Dragons adds an element of caution and wariness to their interactions with outsiders. Members often remain vigilant against perceived threats, both from within and outside the Order. This protective instinct reinforces their solidarity but can also lead to a culture of suspicion toward those who do not share their beliefs.

Public Agenda

Preservation of Draconic Knowledge: One of the primary goals of the Order is to preserve and disseminate the ancient teachings and lore of the Greatwyrms. This includes collecting ancient texts, recording oral histories, and maintaining sacred sites where draconic magic can be studied. By safeguarding this knowledge, the Order aims to ensure that future generations can access the wisdom of the dragons and learn from their experiences.   Spiritual Ascension and Transformation: The Order encourages its members to pursue personal growth and transformation through rigorous study and practice of draconic magic. Their public agenda promotes the belief that every individual has the potential to ascend closer to dragonhood, embodying the qualities of strength, wisdom, and resilience. Through rituals, mentorship, and community support, the Order fosters an environment where followers can strive for their highest potential.   Defense Against Corruption: The Order positions itself as a protector against the influence of the Chromatic Dragons and other corrupting forces. Their agenda includes a commitment to rooting out heretical beliefs and practices that deviate from their teachings. This protective stance not only strengthens their internal cohesion but also serves as a rallying call for followers to stand against perceived threats to their way of life.   Fostering Unity Among Races: While rooted in draconic reverence, the Order also seeks to promote unity among the various races of Aurora. The agenda emphasizes collaboration and understanding among diverse communities, recognizing that the survival of the realms depends on mutual respect and cooperation. The Order actively engages with other groups to create alliances that further their mission of safeguarding the world from threats.   Guiding the Lost: The Order sees itself as a beacon of hope for those lost or displaced, just as with the refugees from the Draconic Crusades. By offering guidance and support, they aim to provide a sense of belonging and purpose, channeling the struggles of the past into a collective journey toward enlightenment.

History

To understand our sacred Order, one must first know the truth of the Greatwyrms, the first children of Aurelion Sol. These mighty beings were born to protect the Veiled Realms, guiding the first dragons, Dragonborn, and Kobolds into a golden age of prosperity. Under the watchful gaze of the Greatwyrms, we thrived, and our magic grew strong.   But pride, my friends, was the downfall of the Dragonborn. In their thirst for power, they sought greater magical control, ignoring the warnings of the Greatwyrms. They forgot that magic, when unchecked, can consume all. And so, our mighty forebears—the wise and just Greatwyrms—imposed restrictions on their magical studies. But this act of protection was seen as oppression by some. A small group of resentful Dragonborn, consumed by hatred, sought to slay one of the Greatwyrms. In response, the Dragonborn were banished from the Origin Peaks.   Then came the dark days of the Draconic Crusades. Invaders from distant realms sought to conquer Aurora, bringing with them their own armies—races who now walk among us, not as enemies, but as fellow inhabitants. Yet, it was not always so. These invaders captured a few true dragons and twisted them, experimenting on their essence to birth the Chromatic Dragons. Deceived by lies, these dragons fought against us, siding with the invaders. The Crusades nearly destroyed all we held dear. So many Greatwyrms fell protecting our world.   In time, the invaders’ gods and masters either perished, or were exiled to the realms they came from. Leaving their followers stranded on Aurora. It was then that our ancestors, the refugees, realized the mercy of the dragons. Grateful for their salvation, they formed what is now our Order—the Order of the Primordial Dragons. We began to revere the Greatwyrms as true divine beings, honoring their sacrifices, strength and their wisdom.   Yet, as light shines, so too do shadows grow. Not all who joined us were grateful. There were those who resented the dragons for the very salvation they received. These souls—bitter, envious, and hateful—found their place among the worshippers of the Chromatic Dragons. In secret, they spread their poisoned ideas, creating a division within our ranks. They twisted the teachings of the Chromatics into something feral, wild, and full of rage.   This schism continues to haunt us. Today, many Dragonborn distrust our Order, associating us with those who resent dragonkind. And while we honor the Greatwyrms and hold to the teachings of Aurelion Sol, we must always remain vigilant against those who would use our sacred beliefs for destruction.   Remember, we are the keepers of the Greatwyrms’ legacy. Their blood flows through us, their wisdom guides us. We must ensure that the light of the dragons never fades, no matter the trials we face.
