The Tamaran Depths
"The Tamaran Depths are a place where light forgets its name. Beauty thrives here—reefs that burn like fire in the dark—but every breath is borrowed, and every shadow carries teeth."
— Finnias Renwake, Journal of the Third Descen
In a vast stretch of the Sea of Veil lies the Tamaran Depths, an underwater realm alive with astonishing diversity and the seat of Caraballa, the capital of the Aqaurri. The Depths encompass famed locations such as Korelune Reef, The Killing Reef, and the Lumino Kelp Forest, each part of a complex, multi-layered ecosystem. Countless other places remain hidden, known only to those who call these waters home.
Legends claim the Depths are named for an ancient king of Tamaria. It is said a great civilization sank during a cataclysmic earthquake, its remnants now forming the seabed below. Scattered ruins near Caraballa hint at this lost world, buried in sand and coral, awaiting those brave—or foolish—enough to seek them. Others believe the Depths were shaped by the Sunken and Vespera, who built much of this realm during a tempestuous love tryst. Whether myth or history, the Depths are real, breathing, and teeming with life. Many argue over the identity of the Sunken’s son’s mother, though Edarr, the God of Storms, holds sway over their fate.
Spanning hundreds of miles, the Depths form a labyrinth of chasms, trenches, caves, atolls, and deadly reefs. Hidden bioluminescent caves harbor life that few survive to see, while near geothermal vents, only fire-snails endure. The Cerulean Current, a warm deep-water flow, winds through the Deeps, influenced by the vents and the moon, Lunestra, as it orbits Astrovos. Sunlight reaches only the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones, leaving the aphotic depths in near-total darkness, home to unknown horrors. Among these wonders, the Korelune Reef feeds off lunar light, a spectacle as mysterious as it is beautiful.
The Depths host incredible wildlife. Lunar Rays, giant string rays patterned like constellations, glide silently through the waters. Blood-Iron Whales, with rust-colored skin, sing deep, echoing songs across the trenches. The Lumino Kelp Forest, glowing with bioluminescent air bubbles, shelters Lumino Sea Otters, azure-fin pufferfish, inkspot squid, satin-lace sea dragons, and luminescent sea flowers. Predators such as sharks, dracosharks, and plated sawfish hunt in packs, making refuges like Korelune Reef and the Kelp Forest essential for survival.
At the heart of the Depths lies Caraballa, a city of glass domes, thriving reefs, and magical architecture. Here, Aqaurri and land-dwellers coexist, with Carabelle Castle, a living fortress of versperite, towering above biodomes, markets, and gardens that pulse with life. Messages flow tirelessly across the Veil via Deep Sea Otters, carrying song, light, and secrets of the deep.
The Depths are steeped in history. Ancient pottery and metal coins depict gods and civilizations unknown to scholars, many mosaics showing the Sea-God’s union with a flower-born goddess of love, fueling debate about Tamaran origins. Edarr subtly influences the ocean, stirring or calming currents with his moods.
Danger is never far. The Umbral Water, a dark, inky tide that drains life, is held at bay only by Aqaurri wielding powerful water magic. Created by Maelorn, the Whisperer of Dark Secrets, it may serve a greater, unknown purpose. Beyond this, marauders known as the Portcross plunder islands, capture Aqaurri, and disrupt the seas, casting long shadows over the vibrant life of the Depths.
Whether born of legend or history, the Tamaran Depths remain alive, breathing, and teeming with life, a world of beauty, peril, and endless discovery.
