The Phaneron
You know, how sometimes, you’re having a bad dream? Being chased, falling, attacked, or in a living nightmare? And occasionally, you know those moments in the dream where your heart drops, time freezes, and you see something lash out at you, ready to end your life at a moment’s notice?
But just before you die, your brain stops you. It pulls you out, jerking you back to reality.
But what if - what if you couldn’t rely on your brain to wake you up, and your dream-self is killed?
That’s an interesting question, and, due to the odd nature of the brain, was never answered.
That is - until - the Phaneron was created.
Utility
Scientifically, the Phaneron is a crowd-sourced neural lattice that is capable of generating entire universes inside it by pooling resources from all machines connected to it. The main storage database is held on a Storage World owned by The Uprising of the Rakkari the creators and maintainers of the Phaneron System.
The Phaneron allows use of a Virtual space in which users can create or connect to other’s personal universes within the system via the use of a Phaneron Helmet, or if they so desire, simply connect to the Neural lattice themselves and enter their brain as a temporary resource to the Jupiter Brain Hivemind known as “Osira,” which is used by various scientific entities to run super-simulations in order to simulate large concepts and ideas in attempt to further their advancements.
The Phaneron makes extensive use of Mind Transfering technology to allow the safe and continuity-keeping feeling of using the digital space. When entering the Phaneron, the helm that must be worn essentially causes the Mind Transferring process to be held within a perfect middle ground, where your body and digital form are simultaneously receiving sensory information, but the helm intentionally disables the body temporarily to cause the user to be full immersed within the digital world.
While all Phaneron helms must legally be made with an emergency eject button on the outside, to allow real-world people to "pull the plug" on the user, doing this can be extremely disorienting and cause temporarily loss of motor functions and sound mental faculties due to the sudden nature of the process. In the case of the Phaneron itself ever sustaining damage to the point where the link cannot be severed, the helm effectively becomes a trap. If the user's mind inside the Phaneron is ever attempted to be pulled out of the system when the capability is not available, the user's mind - effectively their consciousness and personality, is deleted from the data servers of Osira, effectively killing the mind. The body left behind effectively becomes brain dead, as the helm never receives the signal to merge the data, as it no longer exists - though technically, you could wake the body out of its comatose state and wake it up (assuming it survives the process), the person having no memory of ever going into the Phaneron in that particular session.
Social Impact
The Phaneron is potentially the final form of media, beit it social, consumption, production, or interaction. With sextillions of custom-made worlds to explore, a full integration of any device you could want in the real world with full connectivity, and the ability to be and look like whoever you want has created a highly influential "second galaxy" within the Milky Way, entirely digital.
If there's an activity that can be done in the real world, it's statistically guaranteed that the Phaneron has a near molecular-level accurate recreation of it, from schooling, to browsing, to gaming, to killing, all made by anyone you could think of. The scope of it is truly difficult to fully grasp.
Governments use the Phaneron as a means of secure and anonymous communication, war simulators, combat training, reality prediction, virtual meetings, virtual elections. Civilians use it as a means to see one another, to create art, music, stories, and worlds, to shop, to hang out with strangers in a public space, to party, to play video games, to be aboard real-life ships, to love.
It's almost impossible to meet someone who's never at least logged into the Phaneron before - its use is nearly universal within the Galaxy, essentially required to function within it. Want to talk with someone? Turn off your HoloGaun, and get into the Phaneron. Want to get the latest headlines as soon as they're ready? You need to be in the live studio audience of the broadcast. Need to discuss anything important that you can't easily in person? Phaneron.
It's like a second life in here - and many treat it as such, some may even treat it as their whole life, having their minds uploaded into the system via Mind Transfering, never to return to the real world.
Discovery
The Phaneron is the creation of The Uprising of the Rakkari, and is defined, from the Human Greek word phaneros, created by Philosopher Charles Sanders Peirc, as the manifestation of the mind in a subjective reality, no matter of the physical word in tandem existence.
This reality can take the form of anything: A library, a hub of information, an arena, a world of wonder beyond the physical bounds of reality, and - by definition - being connected to the Phaneron is to be connected to everyone else inside their own mind within the system.
