Temple Hand

The title of Temple Hand is given to those who work at a temple as a helper. It is more often than not a paid position but can be voluntary, sometimes used as one way of fulfilling one's required hours of dedication at religious temples with such commitments. Temple Hands are not usually full-time staff, dedicating only a few hours of their time, and are typically paid a small enough wage that they will hold a part or full-time job elsewhere to earn enough wages for expenses. This means their hours at the temple need to be flexible to fit around the hours of their steady job. With most Temple Hand positions only being called upon by the priest or priestess for extra help during worship services, this does sometimes create a conflict and can make it difficult to find candidates who are able to help out in the hours needed.

One example of the use of Temple Hands in "The Truth of Tala'm" is at the Temple of Eir in Salvaernia. The priestesses there help displaced girls find part-time employment outside of the temple to earn a wage and be taught a useful trade and life skills. The girls are then expected to give a portion of their time in service at the temple as Temple Hands to help with housekeeping, patient care, and worship set-up and tear-down. In return, the girls are given nourishment, fellowship, and a safe place to call home.

Career

Qualifications

The qualifications needed for being a Temple Hand do not often require prior experience, depending on the task, but always demand a willingness to immediately do as one is told and to maintain a pleasing and helpful attitude toward everyone while at work.

Career Progression

A showing of competence and skill can result in a promotion to supervisor or a specialized role. This is usually accompanied by an increase in pay and additional responsibilities. With enough commitment to the calling and faith, one can choose to advance toward training to become a priest or priestess.

Perception

Social Status

Considered a lower occupation by most, it is nonetheless a required entry point for those faith members striving to reach a higher and more respected position within the faith.

Demographics

Those employed as Temple Hands are most commonly females of younger age. This has lead to the nickname of being called maidens, although being unmarried or a virgin (as the word would suggest) is not a requirement.

Operations

Provided Services

The duties of a Temple Hand are varied, but may consist of small tasks such as cleaning floors, washing and folding laundry, watering plants, gardening, holding incense burners or distributing items during services, performing in traditional garb or costume, greeting patrons at the door, and assisting the elderly or infirm.

Dangers & Hazards

Working conditions are usually not hazardous. There is a chance of on-the-job injury due to slips and falls if safety precautions are not adhered to. The chores are calm and nourishing to the soul, and in most cases Temple Hands are treated with respect by most patrons and passerby. There have been incidences of those who oppose a certain religion resorting to violence or shouting.
