The Trench

Until the end of the nineteenth century, monsters had always been written off as creatures of myth and legend. Now they almost seem to leap off the pages of storybooks: Monsters, Living-Inanimate Objects, Spirits of the Dead, anomalous occurrences, and even beings from other worlds. Collectively referred to as AEs (Anomalous Entities), or as Supernaturals, and so many more were very much real and very, very dangerous. The Organization, a global organization was founded in secret to obscure these supernatural beings from public attention and most governmental organizations through various means. The most common method being either the capture or, if necessary, destruction of the entity in question. Over time, The Organization's facilities became too numerous and began attracting unwanted eyes from both the public and government agencies. Thus, the Trench was built in secret. A gigantic underwater prison in the most remote area of the sea. Going from the surface of the ocean to its blackest depths. It’s big enough to be a small country. The city-like structure served as both a convenient way to both contain and study any Supernatural the Organization could acquire as well as keep them hidden away from public awareness. And for a while, it worked. But then in 2019, something happened. The security systems shut down, and the monsters now roam free within the confines of the Trench. The men and women who once guarded, ran, and maintained the Trench, are now in constantly on the run from a plethora of living nightmares. While the Organization decided not to attempt to restore order to the prison. Deeming it a waste of resources and convinced that the monsters wouldn't be able to escape back into the world. And so, the Trench was left it to be forgotten. Cut from all outside communications, most of the outside world is completely oblivious to the horror just beneath the waves. Yet some people, still come to the Trench, lured by its supernatural nature, and the powers it holds inside.

Purpose / Function

Made by Man, Abandoned by Gods, Prison for Monsters

Built by the Organization as a prison to house and study all supernatural entities in their custody.

Sensory & Appearance

The Trench is a place of varied appearances. From the veneer of opulent splendor in the Upper-Levels to the somber darkness and industrial decay of the maze-like Lower-Levels that festers the deeper one goes until reaching the oppressive silence and pitch darkness of the Abyyssal Prison.

Denizens

Even during the Trench's operational lifespan, the monstrous prisoners housed within the Trench vastly outnumbered their human captors ten-to-one. The megastructure was crewed by a staff of around 843,342 Organization members.

Architecture

A massive superstructure, the Trench is the size of a small country. From the surface, the Trench appears as little more than a tiny island with a singular smokestack. Below the waves, one would find the Trench to instead be a gargantuan superstructure. The Trench is somewhat cylindrical in shape and extends to a depth of approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) below sea level. Making it the largest man-made structure in the world.

Within this massive metal tomb, one will find a labyrinth of darkened metal and concrete corridors that lead to a wide variety of locations and facilities. Each possessing its own distinct style and purpose.

Interior Layout

The Trench superstructure is divided into two hemispheres, each subdivided into 12 bridge-controlled zones, for a total of twenty-four zones, also known as sprawls or sectors. Each sprawl located in what is now known as the Lower-Levels would have food replicators, hangar bays, hydroponics labs, the primary containment centers (officially referred to as cell blocks) alongside their corresponding research labs, medical centers, armories, command centers, storage centers that collectively housed a stock up to 3 years worth of consumables without needing to be resupplied by outside sources or the before mentioned hydroponics, and every other facility needed to provide service for any mission deemed necessary. In an emergency, auxiliary command centers located in each sprawl provided full weapons and, for the outer sprawls lining the megastructure's hull, compartmentalized section control in the event of a hull breach, for a redundancy depth of twice a dozen. Each zone had its own bridge, and each zone bridge reported to the Trench's overbridge, located just under the Upper-Levels. The Trench comprised thirty-four separate central facilities. Each level had 4-meter (13.1 foot) high sublevels. A nominal number of sub-levels were then to be stacked around the surface of a central facility, encompassing the inner stacked levels. A number of the Trench's submersible docking bays were reserved for admitting larger organisms, such as the larger species of dragons, into the Trench. Featuring larger facilities and more significant defenses. Following in rings around the Trench's width are a series of high-way style tunnels that allow for vehicular travel and the large-scale transportation of resources and personnel quickly throughout the megastructure. With large vehicle elevators at multiple points to allow drivers to go up and down a level. A similar monorail system exists solely for personnel travel.

Aside from its primary facilities used to contain and study supernatural beings, the Trench also includes sub-facilities such as parks, shops, and other amenities for the humans stationed there, as well as numerous infrastructure necessities such as trash compactors. Most of the more luxurious accommodations were reserved for the highest-ranking officers and members of staff, located in the Upper-Levels. Forming something like an opulent city well away from the containment facilities below.

Defenses

Internal

While the Organization was still in control, the Trench was a nigh impenetrable fortress. With a standing security force of approximately 607,360 human guards supplemented by 400,000 security robots to keep the monstrous inmates in their place. While most of the automated defenses varied wildly depending on individual sectors and the capabilities of the respective supernatural being held, ceiling-mounted turrets were a near constant. Additionally, corridors could be remotely shut by reinforced hydraulic security doors from the local sector bridge to prevent potential escapees or hazardous materials from escaping containment. In areas that require a higher level of security, these blast doors are additionally reinforced by hard light ray shields. Designed to absorb radiation and raw energy, such as fire or electrical blast produced by natural, man-made, or magical sources. Ray shields also do not allow physical objects through them completely unscathed, imparting a deadly electric shock upon contact. A major flaw that unfortunately came to light during the breakout is that most of the Trench's interior defenses were automated and while there were multiple redundancies in place to prevent a total system shutdown, whatever force caused the events of the Breakout to unfold was powerful enough the shut all the redundancy systems out, leading to the mass chaos that the human soldiers were unprepared to deal with.

External

While most of the Trench's defenses were geared towards interior defense and pacification, the Trench's exterior also boasted considerable armaments. The exterior hull of the megastructure was riddled with missile pods and torpedo launchers to repel attackers, each manned by crews of the 57,278 gunners on the station. The Trench also had five field generators studded along the entire facility from the ocean surface to the seafloor, which included a jamming field that affected every radar, sonar, radio, and satellite sensor of every ship, plane, or cellular device within a diameter range of 9.26km (or five nautical miles). Together these field generators created a distortion potent enough to reduce or altogether stop any communication signals attempting to exit the facility. However, the fields do not affect communications traveling within the facility. The field generator closest to the surface had to be deactivated in order to communicate with Organization vessels approaching the Trench.

But no outside defense was as great as the Kraken. The Organization had built a device that attracted the Kraken to the Trench's location in the sea and prevented the gargantuan beast from attacking the structure itself. Instead, the Kraken would attack any vessel that got too close, the quickness and ferocity of its attacks meant that it could destroy incoming vessels before they even had a chance to call for help. Allowing the Organization and the Trench's location to remain secret.
