Silverstring Library
The Silverstring Library, officially the Theodard Silverstring Library or informally the Elturel Library, is the primary library of Elturel, situated in the city's High District just north of High Hall.
Purpose / Function
Like all libraries, the Silverstirng Library was established to further the knowledge of the populace of Elturel by allowing individuals to temporarily borrow books for reading, though no books can be taken off of the premises without permission from the chief librarian.
Alterations
While the library had seen occasionally updates or expansions over the decades it had existed, the bulk of the current interior and facade is not original, as the library was extensively damaged during the Damnation of Elturel in the late 15th century CR.
History
The Elturel library was established in the 14th century CR. Its original collection was originally a substantial donation from one of the city's wealthy merchants, and over the years the library expanded and increased its collection through select purchases.
By the middle of the 15th century, the position of chief librarian was given to Theodard Silverstring, a halfling man and lifelong Elturian that had been working at the library for decades.
When Elturel became the capital of the new nation of Elturgard in 1453, there was brief discussion about renaming the library to the Elturgardian State Library, but these discussions ultimately feel through due to fears that the library's new title then require it to loan or purchase books on behalf of the other cities in the nation.
During the Damnation of Elturel, the Elturel Library was repeatedly targeted by cultists of Zariel, who had flocked to the city to celebrate its destruction. These cultists broken down the library's doors and took massive quantities of the library's books to burn in large bonfires to celebrate their infernal revelry. While not every book was destroyed, many were relocated by the Lost Star Detectives, the saviors of Elturel, to High Hall for safekeeping, the damage done to the city's font of knowledge was incalculable.
Following Elturel's return to the Material Plane in early 1498, the city began its large scale reconstruction projects, and Elturel's library was among the list of projects. There was originally talk of naming the rebuilt library after Kinsey Eridanus, one of the Lost Star Detectives, for her role in saving the city, but Kinsey insisted that the library instead be named after Theodard Silverstring, the chief librarian and somewhat of a mentor to Kinsey. Agreeing with her wishes, the library was renamed to the Theodard Silverstring Library.
