Personal history

Jian war born into the royal house of the Ching Empire. He spent his childhood in the court as the Emperor's 7th born child. Being born to the emperor's second favorite concubine, he was in danger of assassination from the favorite concubine and those who were worried about their succession. Then, opportunity knocked. The vishkanyas, a race in control of the Southern regions of the Eastlands, threatened to invade Ching. To prevent this invasion, the emperor decided to give them a hostage. Jian's mother convinced the emperor to send him. Jian spent the next portion of his life among the vishkanyas. They taught him many things and he became as fascinated of them as he was cautious of them. He stayed with them until he was 16, when news came of the emperor's favorite concubine's assassination, as well as that of her sons, and the second favorite's execution for the crime. Some of the vishkanyas escorted him to the countryside where he hid for two more years until the emperor's death. The new emperor raised taxes heavily and secluded himself in his private city. 3 of his half-brothers used this as an opportunity to rebel. Jian went to one of those brothers and swore alligiance to him, bringing a vishkanya contingent to his army. They defeated another of the half-brothers and marched on the city, taking it. However, Jian's commander died in this battle. So, Jian declared himself emperor at the age of 19. Shortly after, the third half-brother was found dead in his camp. Jian's first act as emperor was to reduce the export tax on spices, gaining the support of the merchants. He then reduced tariffs on the vishkanyas to solidify their support. His next act was to appoint general Shanyang to a prestigious position in the bureaucracy, gaining the support of a large portion of the army and putting someone in place who could keep the bureaucracy in line. However, the nobility were displeased that Jian lowered taxes on spice exports, as it eroded their income, and that he was doing more business with the vishkanyas and they rose in rebellion. This revolt was swiftly put down by Shanyang. Afterwards, Jian had the families of every noble involved in the rebellion killed and appointed lower-ranking nobles and bureaucrats to take their place. That was one year ago. Jian is now 23 and is working on a new system of roads to increase trade. He is wary of the vishkanyas and has secretly been raising forces in the Southern regions.
