The Soothers

because someone needs to put them at ease

Why do we need the Soothers?

One of the first things we learned when exploring this continent was that the magic of the ancients still lingers strongly. We quickly adapted and learned to live alongside these strange occurrences.
What is most peculiar though, is the fact that their ghosts seem to be much more different than the ones we knew at home. They were far older, far more deteriorated and influenced by their magic, twisted and warped to a degree we had never seen.
They are unapproachable, aggressive and much more dangerous than anything we encountered at home. Destroying them is exceptionally hard and laying them to rest is no option, since we have no chance to discover what unfinished business binds them to the material world. To work around this threat, the Soothers were created.
Trained to be more in tune with the continent than anyone else, their main task is to keep the ghosts at bay with the help of various rituals that are a closely guarded secret.

Requirements

Anyone can become a soother, although there are a few preconditions that can make the process a lot easier.
First it is very beneficial to belong to one of the remade races, as they seem to draw less aggression from the spirits than the old races. It is theorized that the shared connection to the continent might be the cause of that.
Secondly, a talent for magic is always wanted in applicants.
Last but certainly not least: a generally calm and relaxed nature is encouraged and actively sorted for.

Work

Once an applicant has passed the training courses, they are placed on a rotation along different stations across the continent, aquainting them with the many different variations of ancient spirits that may haunt the land. There they train with experienced soothers and gain their practical knowledge.
To repay the training, they are then bound to work for five years in the name of their employer, before they are free to follow their own path.
