Meor's Folly

for the ones that are dying anyway

Meor

Why would anyone build a settlement this close to the Grasslands, endangering every inhabitant by exposing them to the spirits that inhabit them? Why would you rebuild a city when it is destroyed, just a bit farther out, again and again?
Well, nobody really understands why Meor keeps doing that and what his specific goals or intentions are. It probably does not help that he has become a ghost himself and is likely suffering from the singular focus many of the undead seem to show.
He has expressed discontent with the naming of the settlement but does not really seem to mind it.

Locations

Meor's Mansion
Rebuilt as frequently as the city. Meor uses it study the artefacts recovered from the Grasslands, it said to be very secure and the ever wakeful nature of its owner has prevented any incidents so far. Yet, somebody seems to have broken in just a short time ago, Meor claims that nothing has been taken.
  Soother's HQ
The settlement is protected by the few Bisonfolk who are capable of keeping the ancient spirits at bay. Everything they need to full-fill that purpose is stored here. Anyone willing to pay the coins will also be able to recruit them as guides, as far as they dare to go.
  The Notary
One of the most busy offices in the entire city. No one wants their belongings to fall into the wrong hands if they never make it back. No one wants to venture into the Grasslands with unfinished business. So the notaries here are quite busy throughout the year.

History

Founding

Meor's Folly started out as nothing more than a simple encampment of early explorers of the continent. They did not know what was lurking in the Grasslands, and most of them got killed after a few weeks of staying there.
The survivors fled and marked the place as dangeroous on their maps. One however decided to return, something calling him back there.

Meor's Outpost

As an older and much wealthier man, he came back to study the Grasslands. He brought with him the first waves of idiots and fools. They built a small town and a small house for him. Just shy of the location of his old camp.
The place lasted for twenty years before it was destroyed. No one really knows what exactly happened, wild speculations fill the papers and books. Only one knows and he refuses to talk about it.

Meor's Home

Having grown so much wealthier from the artefacts the explorers brought back, Meor was able to have the town rebuild. He called it his home and set out to continue his work. He lived there long and with time the people came to call it that.
If the story ended here, everything would be fine, but it is rarely as simple as that. The First War for Liberation came and Meor chose his side, he aided the rebel forces and supported the independence from the kingdoms of old.
The Scorching hit Meor's Home as well.
This time he did not survive. He burned to death in his home, rising from the ashes as a spirit.

Meor's Folly

The survivors gathered and rebuild their home, slightly outside a bit more, trying to avoid the spirit they had once loved as a man.
Meor followed them. It became apparent quickly that he had kept most of his mind an was trying to aid them. He directed them in how to use his assets and collected fortunes. Eventually the town rose back to its former glory, even exceeded it. It has been like that ever since, but nothing will stay the same forever.

Miscl. Notes

Come and see
The only people brave enough to settle this close to the Grasslands. See where it all began (sort of) and give your goodbyes to the ones that are stupid enough to venture into them alone and without a guide. Make experiences no one else will have, see the vengeful ghosts of the ancients and hear them whisper to you. Will you be able to withstand them?

This was a very intriguing story! Meor is so stubborn with this place, I wonder why.

Unfortunately the continent is set up as a sandbox, so I will have to wait until my players reach the location and take an interest to investigate the whole thing. I hope your summer camp was as fascinating as mine!
