Dragonfall
Overview
Location
To the southeast of the Southern Reaches is a small plot of land, wrecked by a great calamity. At the centre of which sits the city of Dragonfall. Sorrounded by light forests and with a border only secured by patrols from the Seven Families, it is easy to come and go as you wish - unless you have been exiled here.History
The original name of the city has long been forgotten, while those that know refuse to speak it, in fear of incurring the wrath of the curse that was placed on the city. Before the death of the Dragon Emperor, the city was part of what is now known as the Queng-Ho alliance, subsequently being under the rule of the Dragon Emperor. After the catastrophic events of Dragonfall, the city was banished from the alliance and cut off from the rest of the Southern Reaches, a situation that did not improve with the rise of the Seven Families, as they used the city as a convenient place of exile.
All of this lead to the development of a culture that is quite similar to the one dominant in the Southern Reaches but eerily strange and different to those that know what it is actually supposed to be like.
Dragonfall
Happenings
According to the recorded stories told by survivours, it felt like the end of the world. One has to understand that the patron dragon of a mountain is basically the same as a god to the people inhabiting it. To see one die is incredibly rare, it is an event that has been planned for centuries, the dragon preparing their successor to ensure a smooth transition and so forth. What the people of Dragonfall witnessed was none of that, it was a sudden, unexpected and shocking event. It is told that for the first time in decades Ranathax took flight and began circling the city itself, something that in the past had been seen as a sign of good luck and fortune for the entire city. It is said that in that moment the city came to a halt and watched in awe as their patron seemingly blessed them all.
This awe turned to sheer horror and panic as they saw Ranathax attacking her own city, beginning to level it, completely destroying the mountain itself, inversing it into a deep chasm, before rising atop that same chasm, locking her wings and crashing down into the darkness below.
Reasons
Nobody knows what happened to Ranathax to explain her sudden maddness and the resulting event of Dragonfall. Most believe it to be a punishment from the Dragon Emperor for a transgression only a dragon would understand, as their politics are even more convolouted and ethereal than those of us mere mortals.
Dragonfall was a result of the plan to remove the Darkness from Ranathax, as she saw the imminent failure, she decided to put an end to her own life instead of risking those of her subjects. At this point the Darkness had too much influence and deluded the Dragon into destryoing her city and opening the chasm into which she fell.
Ramifications
An entire mountain large enough to hold an elder dragon and her families was completely leveled, together with the city built into it. A large chasm opening up beneath it to swallow everything that was still left.Since that day the city has been called cursed and used as a place of exile for all those that were no longer wanted in the Southern Reaches, only a few people survived these events, as they were not in the city or managed to flee fast enough. Of those, some quickly started to rebuilt the city, building it into the side of the chasms, going down instead of up.
Today only those that have always lived in Dragonfall remain voluntarily, still holding a vigil for Ranathax in the hopes of receiving guidance from the dead dragon. Exiles make a living here, some of them by guiding curious scholars and adventurers into the chasm itself, to explore whatever lies there.
Some people have recently been hearing whispers in the night, rising from the chasm. Some believe them to be halucinations and bad dreams, others think that Ranathax is returning to her rightful place. Guiding her faithful to prepare her return.
A dragon does indeed live in that darkness, once it may have been Ranathax, but no longer. The Darkness has been eating away at her mind and body for too long for her to have any hope. What is left is a conniving, cruel and destructive creature bent completely to the whims of the Darkness.
